Cloud and party begin to cross the mountain range until the come upon a trail up Mt Corel. They come upon an old man sitting to the side of the trail.

A guy in a black cloak passed by not so long ago. I was being friendly, telling him it’s dangerous up ahead, but he completely ignored me!
Cloud faces toward the group and puts his hand on his hip.
CLOUD
Sephiroth…

Takes a couple steps and faces away from the others.

OLD MAN NPC
It’s dangerous up ahead. You be careful now. …One should always greet fellow travellers warmly. It’s the kind of thing that makes being out on the road worthwhile.
They continue along the trail up Mt Corel and pass the Corel Mako Reactor. Past the reactor, there are train tracks. Cloud and party follow along the tracks until they come upon the others, who have stopped at a raised bridge. On the other side of the bridge is a shack with another set of tracks above that lead to it.
AERITH
Cloud!! I was just thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be perfect if Cloud were to show up right now?’ We’re stuck here unless the bridge is lowered. You’ll figure something out though, right? Buuut, before that, maybe we should take a break?
TIFA
Oh, Cloud! Perfect timing! We can’t move on until the bridge is down. I think there’s a switch in that shack over there. But there are too many monsters around, and I’m beat.
RED
Hm? Oh, it’s you. The mechanism that controls the bridge would appear to be in that shack over there. So, might we take this time for a short repose?
AERITH
Come on, Cloud. Let us rest a while.
CLOUD

As Cloud passes by on the tracks above, if Tifa and Aerith are not in the party, they will jump up and down excited.

Cloud makes his way to the tiny shack and enters.
CLOUD
OW! Sure is cramped in here. Come on, Cloud. Pull yourself together. Let’s see… This should be it. Maybe if I move this…

After flipping the switch, the bridge lowers and the others cross and run on ahead. If Cloud climbs up the hill nearby, he and his party will come across a baby bird nest. Under the nest are treasure chests full of Phoenix Tails.

Cloud and party backtrack to the bridge and cross it. Continuing along the track, it’ll fork. If Cloud takes the path to the left, it’ll lead to a cave. Inside, a man lounges across a bulldozer.
BULLDOZER MAN NPC
Wow… How’d you wind up here? Look, I’m sorry, but I can’t do anythin’ for you! Aaaah, god!! Corel sure has gone to pot. One time, the coal mine was famous! There were more jobs than you could shake a… And now look at it! A mere shadow of its former glory. I can’t even get this bulldozer to work. Got no job. I can’t show my face like this. ‘Bout all I’ve got left is living out the rest of my days in this hole, diggin’ away.
Exiting the cave and continuing on the right path of the fork in the train track, Cloud and the party will eventually come upon a rope bridge crossing a canyon. As they cross…

They finish crossing the bridge and walk into a shambled town, riddled with dirt, garbage, and tents, called North Corel.
If Barrett is in the party, a man will walk up to him.

He turns to face the rest of the townspeople.
Hey! He’s back! The arsehole’s back!
Accosting Man 3 NPC runs. Barrett turns to face the others.
BARRETT

Barrett walks over to three accosting NPCs. Accosting Man 2 NPC walks up and punches Barrett.
ACCOSTING MAN 1 NPC

Cloud and the group continue on to the ropeway station.
AERITH

BARRETT

CLOUD
Tell us what happened.
BARRETT
My hometown used to be here.
RED
What do you mean ‘used to be’?
BARRETT
It ain’t there no more. Heard it got buried by sand. Only took four years.
Aerith puts her hands on her hips.
AERITH
But how could they say those terrible things?
Barrett shakes his head.
BARRETT
Because it’s my fault. ALL my fault.
The scene changes to a flashback of Corel. Two Shin-Ra guards stand outside the mayor’s house as townspeople enter.
BARRETT
My birthplace, Corel, had been a coal mining village since way back. Dusty, quiet, poor… Y’know the kind. No-one’d even heard of a Mako reactor up until…
Scene changes to inside the Mayor’s living room. About four townsfolk stand off to the left, Dyne sits on the couch with a young Barrett and the mayor standing on either side of him. Scarlet and two men in business suits stand in front of Dyne.
MAYOR
What are we going to do? The only opposed to this is Dyne.
Dyne stands up and looks at the mayor.
DYNE
Yeah, one hundred per cent. There’s nothing left to discuss if you’re thinking of throwing away our coal! The coal’s been in our blood for generations. Our fathers, and theirs before them, risked their lives for it. We have no right to just throw it all away so easily!
BARRETT
But, listen, Dyne, no-one uses coal nowadays. It’s a sign of the times.
SCARLET
Right. Everything’s Mako now. It’ll be all right, Dyne. The Shin-Ra Company will guarantee your livelihood once the Mako reactor is completed.
BARRETT
Dyne… I don’t want my wife to live this kinda life anymore.
DYNE
I know how you feel! I feel the same way too, dammit! But I can’t just stand by while we abandon our coal mines! The mayor puts his hand on Dyne’s shoulder.
MAYOR
You’ve got to be reasonable.
Dyne looks at Barrett, then at the mayor. The mayor lowers his hand. Dyne sits back down on the couch and lowers his head into his hands, defeated. Barrett begins to narrate again.
BARRETT
That’s how the Corel Mako Reactor got started… an’ finished. We all thought it’d bring us an easier life, but…
The scene changes to show Corel in flames and the bodies of several villagers.
It happened when me and Dyne had just left the village. Corel was burned to the ground by Shin-Ra troops. The villagers… Our families… Everyone… They… They all……
The scene changes back to the ropeway with Cloud and the others. Cloud walks over and stands next to Barrett.
CLOUD
Shin-Ra troops? What the heck for!?
BARRETT
There was an explosion at the reactor. Shin-Ra blamed the accident on us villagers—said it was the work of rebels.
TIFA
That’s awful!
BARRETT
Yeah. But, more than Shin-Ra, I can’t forgive myself. I never shoulda gone along with the reactor.
Tifa walks up.
TIFA
Don’t blame yourself. We were all fooled by the promises Shin-Ra made back then.
Barrett turns and faces away from everyone.
BARRETT
That’s why… That’s why I get so pissed off at myself! Because I fell for their lies, I lost my wife. I lost Mina.
STATION MAN NPC
Hey! If you’re going to the Gold Saucer, hurry up and get on. And don’t worry. It’s free.
CLOUD
