Inside the train’s passenger car, Biggs, Jessie, and Wedge are sitting on the train seats. Shin-Ra Manager NPC is near the back. Cloud, Barrett and Tifa enter the train car.

BARRETT
YO! This ain’t reserved! Split up! Split up!

Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge leave.

SHIN-RA MANAGER NPC
Packed with hoodlums again. God, don’t I just have all the luck?

Shin-Ra Manager NPC sits down and Barrett runs to the end of the car and looks around.
​
BARRETT
Huh? What the…?
​
Barrett runs to the manager and stands in front of him.
​
Hey! This train’s almost empty…Where is everybody?
​
SHIN-RA MANAGER NPC
Eeek!! M-maybe it’s like that because of g-guys like you?
​
Barrett slams his fist against the bench and the manager jumps.
​
Yiiiipes! Y-you’ve seen the news, right? Avalanche threatened more attacks. Only devoted Shin-Ra employees like me would go to Midgar on a day like today.
​
Barrett jumps back and aims his gun arm at the manager.
​
BARRETT
You work for Shin-Ra? Son of a …!
​
SHIN-RA MANAGER (Putting his head in his hands.)
I won’t give in to violence… I… I won’t even give you my seat.
​
TIFA
Barrett!!
​
BARRETT
Shit! You got lucky.
​
Barrett turns and runs back to Cloud. Tifa bows apologetically at the manager and follows Barrett.
​
CLOUD
So, what’s the plan?
​
BARRETT
Arghhh! D’ya have to be so damn calm about everythin’!? You’re bustin’ my rhythm!
​
The train rumbles and starts to move.
​
TIFA
Looks like they’ve finished connecting the cars. We’re leaving.
​
CLOUD
Tell me about the mission.
​
BARRETT
Hah! Look who’s fired up about work. Yeah, I guess I gotta explain… Jessie’s probably told you that there’s an inspection at the plate boundary? It’s a system that performs an ID-check on each car.
​
TIFA
Which Shin-Ra loves to boast about, of course!
​
BARRETT
Our fake IDs won’t work there.
​
TRAIN ANNOUNCEMENT TEXT
Thank you for travelling with us. We will be arriving at District 4 Station at 11:45, Midgar time.

TIFA
That means we’re only three minutes from the check.
​
BARRETT
All right, in three minutes we’re jumpin’ off this train. Got it?
​
Barrett sits down. Tifa runs toward the railway map monitor and turns back to Cloud.
​
TIFA
Cloud, over here. Let’s take a look at the route.

TRAIN HOMELESS MAN NPC
Hm… You’re the only person who talks to me when visiting my home. I’m touched.

BARRETT
Hey, oh-so-wise ex-Soldier… …you oughta know the area ‘round Reactor 5? Let’s see how you handle it.

SHIN-RA MANAGER

Cloud joins Tifa at the monitor.
​
TIFA
Hmm. You’ve seen this before? Oh well. Come a little closer.
​
Cloud shrugs and steps closer to Tifa and the monitor. Suddenly, the train interior starts flashing red.
​
TIFA
That’s odd. The ID-check should be further down.
​
TRAIN INTERCOM TEXT
Type A security alert. Unknown IDs detected. Emergency check on all cars. I repeat… Type A security alert. Unknown IDs detected. Emergency check on all cars.

TIFA
What!?
​
Barrett stands up and runs toward them.
​
BARRETT
The hell’s goin’ on!?

Jessie runs in from the other car.
​
JESSIE
We’re in trouble. I’ll explain later. Hurry to the next car.

BARRETT
Shit! Someone blew it!
​
Special note: A timer will start as Cloud and party go from train car to train car. There are different scenarios based on whether player passes or fails timer for each car. Here is all the passing scenarios and extra NPC dialogue. The fail scenarios are located further down.

Jessie stands in the car with an old man behind her waving his arm, appearing to be feeling her up. The lights go back to normal and the old man runs to the other end of the train. A spiky-haired man and a woman are talking.

BARRETT
We in the clear?
​
JESSIE
Not yet. The next check starts soon. If they find us, we’re finished! But don’t worry. If we keep moving up the train, we should be all right.
​
Lights start flashing red again. Jessie runs to the next car. On the way, as she passes the old man, she turns toward him and punches the man, knocking him out. The spiky-haired man casually walks away from the woman.

TRAIN ANNOUNCEMENT TEXT
Unknown passengers moving to the front half of the train. Confirming present location.

18 second timer begins.

SPIKEY-HAIRED THEIF NPC (When passed by in the train car, he starts running.)

He stops at the door to Car 3, which is locked due to security level.

SPIKEY-HAIRED THEIF NPC (When selected again as though being caught.)

18 second timer begins. There are three men sitting on the benched shivering because they have no clothes on. The woman thief is continuing to run down the train car.

There are three men standing in the car and looking around. One is a passenger, one is a Shin-Ra guard, and one is in a hat and trench coat. Three more Shin-Ra guards are sitting on the bench with their heads slumped.

BARRETT
All right! We made it! Yo. Over here.
​
Barrett runs to an open train car door. Tifa follows.
​
Let’s go. We’re divin’ out.
​
WEDGE (Dressed as passenger.)
Guess who? It’s me… Wedge! This is gonna be perfect.
​
JESSIE (Dressed as Shin-Ra guard)
It’s me… Jessie. What do you think? Does a Shin-Ra uniform suit me?

CLOUD

JESSIE

Tifa jumps off. Cloud faces Barrett and runs a hand through his spiky hair.

CLOUD
You don’t care if I go first?

BARRETT
A leader stays ‘til the end. Get on with it.
​
Cloud starts for the door. Barrett stands up.
​
Cloud… Don’t go getting’ your spiky-ass hurt. The mission’s just started.
​
Cloud shrugs and jumps off the train. Barrett turns to Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie.
​
Later! You handle the rest.
​
Barrett jumps. In the train tunnel if successful with all train timers.

BARRETT
Good. So far, everythin’s goin’ as planned. Don’t let your guard down. We still gotta get to Reactor 5. Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie have gone on ahead of us. C’mon. Let’s go. Reactor 5’s just down this tunnel…

If party runs down the tunnel in the wrong direction, Cloud comes across two guards.

Shin-Ra guards. We’ll have to turn back.
​
Running down the tunnel, Cloud comes upon beams of green lights blocking the path forward.
​
CLOUD
These light beams are Shin-Ra security sensors. We can’t go any further.
​
Approach the control panel on the side wall and there’s a duct tunnel underneath the panel.
​
BARRETT
Man, that’s one tight fit. We have to go under the plate from here? Argh! Whadda we do, Cloud?
​
CLOUD

Have a good look inside

TIFA (Have a good look inside)
Doesn’t seem to be anything we can use as a foothold in the duct.

CLOUD
Yeah… Once we go down, there’s no coming back up.
​
BARRETT
This is no time to mess around. Never know when Shin-Ra’ll turn up. Cloud, there’s no other way.
​
BARRETT (Jump down)
Damn, man. This gives me the chills.
​
Cloud jumps down the duct.
​
BARRETT (Don’t jump down)
You’re not goin’? But this might be the only way to the reactor…
​
Jumping down into the ducts, Cloud and party end up on maintenance walkways beneath the Sector 4 plate.
​
WEDGE
Cloud… The reactor’s up that way.
​
Going up the ladder, they run across Jessie.
​
JESSIE
I’m so sorry. It’s my fault we didn’t clear the ID-check. It was your card, Cloud… I think I overdid it. I put my heart into it, but I failed.
I’ll make you a better one next time. I’m going to go back to the hideout and work hard on my research.
​
Going down a different ladder.
​
BIGGS
We’re pulling out now. See you back at the hideout. Cloud, we’re counting on you!
​
Biggs runs off. Cloud and party make their way toward the reactor core. As they approach the core, Cloud gets a headache and falls to his knees. The setting around Cloud changes to a different reactor. Tifa is wearing a different outfit and kneeling in front of a body with a long sword in her hand.
​
TIFA
Dad… It was Sephiroth! Sephiroth did this to you, didn’t he!? Sephiroth, Soldier, Mako reactors, Shin-Ra… all of them! I hate them all!!
​
With the sword in her hand, Tifa runs through a doorway out of sight. The scene changes back to Mako Reactor 5 with Tifa and Barrett staring at Cloud, who is kneeling on the ground and holding his head.
​
BARRETT
Yo, get a grip!
​
Tifa walks closer to Cloud.
​
TIFA
Are you all right?
​
CLOUD
…Tifa.
​
TIFA
Hm?
​
CLOUD
N-no… Don’t worry. Come on! Let’s do it!
​
Cloud gets up and Tifa walks over to the reactor core. Cloud turns to Barrett.
​
Yeah, yeah… You’re keeping an eye on me, right?
​
BARRETT
You got it. Tifa’s childhood friend… That ain’t good enough.
​
Cloud sets the bomb, and the party makes their way to the exit. Exiting the elevator, they enter a room with three large buttons.
​
TIFA
Jessie said the three of us have to push these buttons simultaneously.
​
If Cloud fails the button press...
​
TIFA
Nope. Let’s try again.
​
After succeeding the button press, the party will run out of the reactor and onto the bridge.
BARRETT
This way!
​
He begins to run toward the exit but is stopped as Shin-Ra guards walk onto the bridge.
​
Shin-Ra guards!? Shit! What’s goin’ on?
​
CLOUD
A trap…
​
An older gentleman in a red suit walks out of the reactor and onto the bridge. He stops a ways in front of them.
​
BARRETT
P-President Shinra?
​
TIFA
Why’s the president here?
​
PRESIDENT SHINRA
Ahh… You must be that rabble… What’s its name again?
​
BARRETT
Avalanche! An’ don’t you forget it!
​
CLOUD
It’s been a while, Mr President.
​
PRESIDENT SHINRA
Been a while? Oh, it’s you. The Soldier who joined this Avalanche or whatever. Only those exposed to Mako have that glow in their eyes. Tell me, traitor, what is your name?
​
CLOUD
It’s…Cloud.
​
PRESIDENT SHINRA
You’ll have to forgive me. I can’t be expected to remember every Soldier’s name. You would have to be another Sephiroth. Ah, yes… Sephiroth – a brilliant Soldier. Perhaps too brilliant.
​
Cloud takes a step back.
​
CLOUD
Sephiroth…?
​
Barrett runs up, pushing Cloud aside.
​
BARRETT
Don’t give two craps about that! This place is goin’ up in smoke! Serves ya damn right!!
​
PRESIDENT SHINRA
Oh, yes, indeed. The fireworks display will prove rather expensive— and all to deal with a few maggots.
​
BARRETT
MAGGOTS!? You call US maggots!? All that Shin – Ra’s done! Parasites killin’ the planet! An’ you’re the biggest one of all! Now all ya can do is stand there talkin’ a loada crap?
​
PRESIDENT SHINRA
…I’m afraid I’ve grown weary of entertaining you. I’m a very busy man, you see. So, if you’ll excuse me, there’s a dinner I must attend.
​
BARRETT
A dinner? Don’t gimme that! I ain’t even started with you yet.
​
PRESIDENT SHINRA
Not to worry. I’ve made some arrangements… a playmate for you all. He snaps his fingers, and a whirring noise starts up.
​
TIFA
!? What’s that noise?
​
BARRETT
The hell is that? A giant robot zooms in from the left and stops on the right.
​
PRESIDENT SHINRA
Allow me to introduce the two of you. This is Air Buster – a prototype mobile unit. The Weapons Department created him. I’m sure the data it records in your battle together will prove invaluable.
​
CLOUD
Mobile Unit? A helicopter flies in and hovers next to President Shinra.
​
PRESIDENT SHINRA
Now, you really must excuse me.
​
CLOUD
Wait!
​
President Shinra climbs onto the helicopter, and it flies off.
​
BARRETT
Yo, Cloud, we gotta do somethin’.
​
The mobile unit begins to lunge at Barrett and Tifa.
​
TIFA
Cloud! Help! Is this from Soldier?
​
CLOUD
No way. It’s just a machine.
​
BARRETT
I don’t care what it is! I’m gonna bust it up good!
​
They fight and defeat the Air Buster. The Air Buster explodes. Cloud falls into a gap created in the bridge from the explosion. He manages to catch onto an exposed rebar with one hand.
​
BARRETT
It’s gonna blow! Tifa, we’ve gotta get out of here!
​
Tifa is on the ground looking for a way to pull Cloud back up.
​
TIFA
Barrett, can’t you do something?
​
BARRETT
Not a damn thing.
​
TIFA
Cloud! You have to live! You can’t die! There’s so much I have to tell you!
​
CLOUD
I know, Tifa…
​
BARRETT
Hey, you gonna be okay?
​
CLOUD

(Put on a brave face)

(I don’t know…)
CLOUD (Put on a brave face)
… Worry about yourself. I’ll be all right. Take care of Tifa.

BARRETT
Okay. Cloud… Sorry I’ve been a jerk.
​
CLOUD
Stop talking like this is the end.
​
BARRETT
All right. See you later, then.
​
CLOUD (I don’t know…)
Shit. I can’t hold on much longer. Barrett… h-help!

BARRETT
Hey, don’t scream like a girl. I’m sorry. Ain’t nothin’ I can do…

CLOUD
Barrett…
​

All right. See you later, then.

The reactor explodes and Cloud loses his grip, falling to the Sector 5 below. Tifa reaches for him, but Barrett pulls her back.
