Midgar: District 7

Train is at the station and passengers get off. Avalanche members begin to spread out.

BARRETT

Hey! Get over here, all of ya.

They group around him.

BARRETT

That mission was a success, but don’t get careless. The big one’s still to come. No getting’ cold feet… …’cause the next one’s REALLY gonna wake ‘em up! Meet back at the hideout. Move out!!

Barrett runs off followed by Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie.

TRAIN ATTENDANT NPC

When you’ve been a train attendant as long as I have, you’ve seen a lot of people and a lot of situations. People meeting, parting – joy, sadness… After a while, it doesn’t even get to you anymore. I wonder how long it’s been now… You end up laying an invisible rail between yourself and the passengers. It’s so you don’t get caught up in their lives. Me, I’m just the train attendant, plain and simple. It’s easier this way. Still, there have been times when my heart came to a level crossing. Back during the war, I remember a lot of harrowing scenes… But that’s a story for another day. The first train departs at 05:04 Midgar time.

A lovey dovey couple are standing by a streetlamp.

MAN NPC

You’re staying with me tonight.

WOMAN NPC

Oh!

MAN NPC

How about we take it easy somewhere?

WOMAN NPC

Oh! But there’s only the Train Graveyard around here, and they say it’s haunted…

MAN NPC

Damn.

WOMAN NPC

What?

Cloud moves on and sees Barrett, Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie look around before moving on ahead.

MAN BY FENCE NPC

Hey! H-hey!! What the hell are you doing? Butt out…Geez! Oh…You came to see it too? I hear there was a terrorist attack above. Makes you think… …if this tower ever came down, the slums would be dust. Well, no use worrying about it, is there? Check it out, though! It’s this awesome no matter how many times you look up.

Cloud looks up and camera pans up the length of the pillar.

It’s pretty neat here, huh? This is my special place, but feel free to drop by from time to time… Well, take care bro!

He runs off.

BARRETT

Yo! Cloud! Over here!

South of the pillar, there are two guards standing in front of an exit.

GUARD 1 NPC

What the hell are YOU looking at? You got any idea who I am? Up ahead is off limits. I have the miserable job of chasing off bums like you, so get lost!

GUARD 2 NPC

W-wow…You’re great!!

GUARD 1 NPC

Damn straight…Just get to the point.

GUARD 2 NPC

But, uh, I…

Entering Sector 7, Barrett runs into Seventh Heaven and gunfire starts to go off. Several patrons flee the bar. Tifa comes out and bows apologetically. Avalanche goes inside except for Barrett who waits in front of the steps leading to the door.

BARRETT (If you run and talk to Barrett before Tifa goes back inside)

Heh, heh… Wanna see your childhood friend that bad, huh?

CLOUD

  1. Childhood friend?

  2. Out of my way

BARRETT (Childhood friend?)

No good playin’ dumb with me.

BARRETT (Out of my way)

Hey, calm down. You’ll attract attention.

GOSSIP NPC

You’ve heard what’s happened, right?

CLOUD

  1. I’m not interested

  2. No, what?

GOSSIP NPC (I’m not interested)

Oh. I see.

GOSSIP NPC (No, what?)

Really? It’s been all over the news. There’s been a terrorist attack up above, and guess what? The target was the Mako reactor!! You know what this means?

CLOUD

  1. I’m not interested

  2. No, what?

GOSSIP NPC (I’m not interested)

Oh, I see.

GOSSIP NPC (No, what?)

You see, I keep on top of things like this, and it stands to reason… …when the power’s knocked out, computers, traffic lights, and so on, are going to be knocked out as well. There must’ve been about, hmm, easily a billion gil worth of damage. And that ain’t all! I reckon a lot of innocent bystanders lost their lives. If the explosion had been in the middle of the night… well, at least they would’ve gone in their sleep. At any rate, Midgar has been thrown into chaos.

KID NPC

Whoosh! Booom! Avalanche is SO cool.

DARK BROWN PONYTAIL NPC

Oh, come on! What the hell’s going on tonight? It’s been weird ever since the long blackout earlier. Word is it was caused by some terrorists bombing a reactor up above. I was having a quiet beer and watching the news… Next thing I know, I’m getting thrown out! It really pissed me off!! I hadn’t finished my drink. Didn’t even get a chance to pay for it.

JOHNNY NPC

Uhh…Wow, I’m blitzed. Can’t get enough of those homemade cocktails, but they sure do creep up on ya.

Go to Johnny’s house North of Seventh Heaven.

JOHNNY'S PARENTS NPC (From inside house)

We’re not having visitors! Go away!

ITEM STOREKEEPER NPC (From inside store)

We’re closed for today. Please stop by again tomorrow.

Entering Weapon Store.

BLACK-HAIRED NPC

Hey! Who the hell are you? Oh, you wanna talk? A newbie?

CLOUD

  1. Yeah, what of it?

  2. I used to be in Soldier

CLOUD (Yeah, what of it?)

So what, Everyone’s got to start somewhere.

BLACK-HAIRED NPC

Well, you sure like to act big. Tell you what, seein’ how I’m such a warm-hearted guy, I’ll show ya the ropes. Come back this way tomorrow, when you’re in a better mood. I gotta set some stuff up first.

CLOUD (I used to be in Soldier)

The name’s Cloud. I used to be in Soldier, and I’ve got no business with you.

BLACK-HAIRED NPC (While firing his rifle in Cloud’s direction)

Hmph! Well, I’ve never heard of ya!

Heading upstairs to the second floor and enter doorway. Beginner’s Hallway is closed off by a fence in the room with a dog and man in a red jacket running around on the crates inside.

MUSCLED WITH HARD HAT NPC

Hmm… Just who are you? Outsiders aren’t allowed up here. Well, since today’s special, I’m gonna let you in on somethin’. But you gotta keep it to yourself. You heard what happened?

CLOUD

  1. Not that again

MUSCLED WITH HARD HAT NPC (Not that again)

You must be sick of hearing it, but it’s been a while since we had any real news around here. Makes you wonder where we’re headin’, don’t it?

MUSCLED WITH HARD HAT NPC (…)

Everyone’s in a buzz about this terrorist group called Avalanche, who bombed Reactor 1. Apparently, Avalanche made a statement sayin’ that they’re opposed to Shin-Ra, but rumour has it… …they’re just out to kill as many people as they can. Hahahaha! You see, it’s like this… As long as they’re up there causin’ trouble… …weapon stores like us will make a fortune. Haha. I can’t wait to get rid of this mountain of stock. I welcome the chaos with open arms!

RED JACKET NPC

Bet you can’t guess what my job is. Come back tomorrow and find out. Thing is…it’s hard to get honest work here in the slums. I wish I could go to the city above.

Back at Seventh Heaven, Barrett is still standing in front of the steps.

BARRETT

Alright. Go on. Yo, Cloud! Get off your slow-movin’ ass!

Cloud heads up steps and enters Seventh Heaven. Avalanche is sitting at one of the bar’s tables. A little girl in a pink dress with yellow bow stands by the bar.

MARIN

Daddy!!?

The little girl sees Cloud gets scared and runs over to the corner to hide. Tifa goes over to comfort her.

TIFA

Marin! Aren’t you going to say hello to Cloud?

Tifa and Marin walk up to Cloud. Marin stands behind Tifa and fidgets.

TIFA

Welcome back, Cloud. Looks like the mission went well. Did you argue with Barret?

CLOUD

  1. Yeah

  2. Kept my cool

TIFA (Yeah)

I might have known. That’s so typical of Barrett… And when you were little, you got into fights at the drop of a hat. I was kinda worried.

TIFA (Kept my cool)

Hmm. So you’ve grown up? When you were little, you’d get into fights at the drop of a hat.

If player did get flower.

TIFA

Oh? Flowers are so rare these days… They hardly ever grow in the slums. But… if someone gave you a flower… Oh, I get it!

CLOUD

It’s not what you think.

  1. Give it to Tifa

  2. Give it to Marin

TIFA (Give it to Tifa)

Thanks, Cloud. It smells wonderful. Maybe I should fill the whole bar with flowers.

If ‘Give to Marin,’ Marin takes the flower and nothing happens until Barrett comes in.

TIFA (If Cloud did not get the flower)

Thank goodness everyone’s all right.

TIFA

Sorry, Cloud. Looks like Marin’s a little shy.

MARIN

……

BIGGS

Ahhh! Nothin’ like that first drink after a job. Hic!! How about you, Cloud? Care for a beer?

CLOUD

  1. I’m fine

  2. Sure. Why not?

BIGGS (I’m fine)

What? You sayin’ you’re too good to drink with me? Don’t act all big-headed just ‘cause you were in Soldier!

BIGGS (Sure. Why not?)

Hah! That’s more like it. Even if you were with Soldier, you’re still a rookie here. And rookies do what their superiors say.

BIGGS

Ulp…! And, uh, you keep this a secret from Barrett…

WEDGE

Oh! Cloud! Tifa really knows how to cook. …munch…munch… Anyway, I wanna tell you something…

CLOUD

  1. What?

  2. I’m not interested in your stories

WEDGE (What?)

Tifa always lets me taste her cooking. And look at me now – I’m roly-poly. Don’t know whether I should be happy or sad, but it’s good food and drink that’s put this place on the map.

WEDGE (I’m not interested in your stories)

Cloud… Nah, forget it.

JESSIE

G<3o<3s<3h! I feel all excited. I wonder why. (Special Note: Yes, there are heart emojis in some of the dialogue.)

Cloud tries to exit the bar but must jump onto the table to get out of the way of Barrett coming through.

MARRIN

Daddy, you’re home!

BARRETT

Yeah, Daddy’s back.

Barrett lifts Marin onto his shoulder.

BARRETT (Flower: Give it to Marin)

Hm… What’s with the flower?

MARIN

Cloud gave it to me.

BARRETT

Huh…? An’ did ya say thank you?

MARIN

…… Thank you for the flower, Cloud. I’ll take good care of it.

TIFA

Hi, Barrett.

BARRETT

Yo! Guys, we’re startin’ the meetin’!

Barrett walks over to the pinball machine. It becomes a secret elevator shaft that takes him and Marin down to the basement. Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie follow. Tifa walks behind the bar counter. Cloud can choose to exit and wonder around town at this point. Back at the train station, the lovey dovey couple still stand under the streetlamp.

MAN NPC

Come closer.

WOMAN NPC

But…

MAN NPC

It’s cool. Come on, baby…

WOMAN NPC

But…that weird man over there.

MAN NPC

Hm?

Turns to Cloud.

You’re cramping my style. Why don’t you go peep somewhere else, Romeo?

TRAIN ATTENDANT NPC

The first train departs at 05:04 Midgar time.

Outside of Seventh Heaven, Johnny is banging on the door to his parent’s house. Other NPCs are nearby.

GOSSIP NPC

Hey, have you heard?

CLOUD

  1. About what?

  2. I’m not interested

GOSSIP NPC (About what?)

It involves that girl, Tifa, and her bar, the Seventh Heaven. Yeah, so I’m nosey. Sue me. Anyhow, I’ve got the scoop. Interested?

CLOUD

  1. Very

  2. No, I’m not

GOSSIP (Very)

Well, she hangs around with a guy called Barrett and three of his goons. Every now and then they cause trouble at the bar. Like, they just throw someone out for nothing and rough ‘em up. It’s really suspicious. And the place smells like gunpowder or something. It’s not safe, I’m telling you. They’ve just gotta be up to no good!

GOSSIP NPC (No, I’m not)

Oh, now I get it. You’re the cool, composed type, aren’t you?

GOSSIP NPC (I’m not interested)

Oh, now I get it. You’re the cool, composed type, aren’t you?

DARK BROWN PONYTAIL NPC

There’s a TV in there, but that stingy old bat won’t let us in. Come to think of it, there used to be a street TV here in the District 7 slums. But Barrett busted it up. Bam, bam, bam! Out of nowhere with his gun-arm. I think it was when President Shinra came on. He’ll be on today’s news too. Things aren’t looking so good for Tifa’s TV…

JOHNNY NPC

Hey, open up! It’s me… Johnny! Mum!!

KID NPC

All clear! I’m good at being a spy. Ahhh, someone came out. REPORT!! REPORT!!

Back inside Seventh Heaven, approach Tifa standing behind the bar.

TIFA

Take a seat.

Cloud sits.

TIFA

How about… …something to drink?

CLOUD

  1. I’m not in the mood

  2. Make it strong

TIFA (I’m not in the mood)

Oh, come on! I can mix a proper drink now, you know. The customers say they’re the best!

TIFA (Make it strong)

Just a second. It’ll be ready in no time. I’m relieved that you made it back safely.

CLOUD

What’s with you all of the sudden? That job was nothing.

TIFA

I guess not. You were in Soldier… Get your money from Barrett, okay?

CLOUD

Don’t worry. Once I’ve been paid, I’m gone.

Cloud stands up.

TIFA

Hey, Cloud… how do you feel?

CLOUD

…Same as always, I guess. Why’d you ask?

TIFA

It’s nothing… You look a bit tired, that’s all.

Cloud takes the pinball elevator down to the basement. There’s a large TV in the corner. Jessie is working at her computer. Biggs and Wedge are sitting at a table. Barrett is using a punching bag in a different corner with Marin sitting next to him.

WEDGE

Do you think I’m a little uptight?

CLOUD

  1. Yeah

  2. Not really

WEDGE (Yeah)

Our next mission is to bomb Reactor 5. I’m so nervous my teeth are chattering, and yet you’re calm, like always. Don’t you ever get nervous? …Maybe you just can’t feel anything? Heh, heh… Nah, I don’t think so.

WEDGE (Not really)

Well, it’s cool. Don’t worry about it. I may be big, but I’m a coward at heart.

PRESIDENT SHINRA (On the television)

"The organization known as Avalanche has claimed responsibility for the bombing of Mako Reactor 1. According to their declaration, Avalanche intends to continue its reign of terror. However, citizens of Midgar, there is no need for alarm. Soldier has now been mobilized to protect you from this senseless violence. In doing so…”

JESSIE

(Gosh! Look at the news… What a blast. Should there have been so much damage, though? I followed all of the instructions on here. …Unless I made a mistake? Anyway, it was a good bomb. Did me proud.)

BARRETT

Yo, Cloud. There’s somethin’ I wan’ed to ask ya. Was there anyone from Soldier fighting us today?

CLOUD

No. None. I’m positive.

BARRETT

Well, aren’t you Mr Confident?

CLOUD

If you guys had fought with Soldier, you wouldn’t be alive right now.

BARRETT

Don’t gimme that crap! …Jus’ ‘cause you were one of ‘em.

Barrett lunges at Cloud, but Biggs holds him back.

CLOUD

Barrett turns around and throws Biggs into the wall.

BARRETT

Yeah, you’re strong. Maybe all them guys in Soldier are. But, don’t forget, your ass belongs to Avalanche now. Don’t get no ideas ‘bout sidin’ with Shin-Ra.

Tifa comes down and watches.

CLOUD

Siding with Shin-Ra? You asked me a question, and I answered it, that’s all.

Cloud walks right up to Barrett, puts his hands on his hips, and puffs himself up.

CLOUD

I’m going back up. I want to talk about my money.

BARRETT

Argh! Money…

MARIN

Daddy, you’re so cool.

Cloud starts to leave. Tifa approaches him.

TIFA

Wait, Cloud!

BARRETT

Tifa, let him go. Looks like he misses Shin-Ra!

CLOUD

Shut up! I don’t give a damn about Shin-Ra OR Soldier. But, don’t get me wrong… …I don’t care about the planet or Avalanche, either.

TIFA

Please make up with everyone, okay?

BARRETT

Argh! Money…

JESSIE

(Money… Well, a lot was promised, after all. Yeah, definitely. We had an agreement. I guess this means I’ll be reviewing our budget… Oh no! It’s Cloud! I think he heard me!)

WEDGE

Cloud… You say you don’t care, but you’re here talking to me. What you really want are friends… …right?

CLOUD

  1. If you say so

  2. I’m really not interested

WEDGE (If you say so)

You just look kinda lonely. I think we’re the same. I’m here if you need me, Cloud.

WEDGE (I’m really not interested)

Man, you’re cruel. Cold to the bone.

Cloud goes upstairs and starts for the exit. Tifa comes up.

TIFA

Cloud, I’m asking you. Please join us.

CLOUD

Tifa, I’m sorry, but…

TIFA

The planet’s sick. Slowly but surely it’s dying. Someone has to do something.

Cloud shrugs.

CLOUD

Barrett and his buddies are on the case, aren’t they? It’s got nothing to do with me.

TIFA

So…you’re really leaving!? You’re just going to walk right out on your childhood friend?

CLOUD

What?

  1. How can you say that?

  2. …I’m sorry

TIFA (Either option, same dialogue)

And you forgot the promise.

CLOUD

Promise?

TIFA

So, you DID forget. Remember, Cloud? It was seven years ago…

The scene shifts to a water tower in the center of Nibelheim village under a starry night sky.

The village water tower… Do you remember?

CLOUD

Yeah…back then. I thought you’d never come, and it was getting a little cold.

In the flashback, a young Cloud sits waiting at the water tower. A young Tifa comes around and looks at him.

TIFA

Sorry I kept you waiting.

She walks over and sits near him.

Well? You said you wanted to tell me something?

CLOUD

Come this spring, I’m leaving the village for Midgar.

TIFA

All the boys are leaving, aren’t they?

CLOUD

I’m different from the rest. I’m not after any other job. I want to join Soldier. I’m gonna be the best. Just like Sephiroth.

TIFA

Sephiroth? The great Sephiroth?

Cloud climbs to the top of the water tower and nods.

TIFA

Isn’t it hard to join Soldier?

CLOUD

Well, I won’t be able to come back to the village for a while.

Tifa puts her head in her hands and makes a sobbing motion. She stops.

…Hmm?

TIFA

Will you make the headlines?

CLOUD

I’ll do my best.

TIFA

Hey, promise me something… Um… If you become famous, and I’m ever in trouble… you’ll come save me, all right?

CLOUD

What?

TIFA

If I’m ever in a bind, a hero will show up and rescue me. I’d like to experience that at least once. Wouldn’t you?

CLOUD

What?

TIFA

Come on! Promise me!

CLOUD

All right. I promise.

A shooting star flashes across the sky. Scene goes back to inside Seventh Heaven.

TIFA

You remember now, don’t you? Our promise?

CLOUD

I’m not a hero, and I’m famous either. I… can’t keep the promise.

TIFA

But you fulfilled your childhood dream… You joined Soldier. So, come on! You have to keep your promise!

Barrett climbs up the elevator shaft.

BARRETT

Hey, wait a minute, big-time Soldier. A promise is a promise. Here. Take it.

Cloud obtains Barrett’s savings: 1500 gil.

CLOUD

This is my pay? You can do better than that.

TIFA

So, you’ll…

CLOUD

Got the next job lined up? Double it. Three thousand.

BARRETT

What did you just say!!?

TIFA

It’s okay! It’s okay! Listen… (We need all the help we can get, right?)

BARRETT

…Uh, huh. (The rest is for Marin’s schoolin’.) Two thousand.

TIFA

Thanks, Cloud.

Screen fades to black as everyone  sleeps for the night. In the morning, Cloud wakes up in Seventh Heaven’s basement and heads up.

TIFA

Good morning, Cloud! Sleep well?

CLOUD

  1. Barrett’s snoring is ridiculous.

  2. Next to you, who wouldn’t?

TIFA (Barrett’s snoring is ridiculous.)

Shhh… (Keep it down – he’ll hear you. Barrett’s always edgy before a mission.)

TIFA (Next to you, who wouldn’t)

I don’t know what you mean!

BARRETT

Our target’s Mako Reactor 5. Head for the station. I’ll fill you in on the train. Uh, Cloud… …before the next mission, I got somethin’ I need to ask. See, thing is… I don’t really know how materia works. I’ll give ya the one we found, jus’ teach me how to use it!

CLOUD

Weeell…

  1. Okay

  2. Forget it

CLOUD (Okay)

Sure. I’ll explain how materia works. First, access the menu. You know the basic commands, right? Press [triangle] to bring up the menu, and use the Directions to move the cursor. Like that. Select each submenu by pressing O. If you want to leave the menu, just press X. Anyway, let’s get to it. This is the main menu. Select Materia to open the materia submenu. Select who you want to access it. Pay close attention to my weapon. Like an armour, it has slots. Choose which slot you want to put the materia into. Now select the materia you want to use. This is Restore materia. If you want to know what its effect is, line the cursor up with Check, and press O. It’s like selecting battle commands. Just line the cursor up with Magic, and you can see that there are now more spells available. Now, you can use a new magic called Cure. And that’s all there is to equipping materia. See? It’s not so tough!

When you want to remove a materia, it’s as easy as pointing to the materia slot and pressing [triangle].

There’s just one thing you have to watch out for… When you equip materia, your condition changes. Parts of you become stronger, while other parts become weaker. Normally, when you equip Magic materia, your magic power becomes stronger, but your physical strength becomes weaker. So, materia’s kind of a double-edged sword. The left side of the screen shows the effect that the materia has on you. It’s wise not to overuse Magic materia. Experiment with it on your own. That’s about it. I’ll explain the more advanced things another time.

BARRETT

Shit! The hell was all that ‘Not so tough’ crap about? I didn’t get a word of it. You handle the materia.

NON-CHARACTER TEXT BOX

You can equip materia by opening the menu and selecting Materia.

BARRETT (Forget it)

So, that’s Soldier’s big secret, huh? Never mind. I’ll ask Jessie later, but you’re still handlin’ the materia!

TIFA

I’m coming along with you this time. Oh yeah. Cloud… …the guy on the second floor of the weapon store told me he has something for you. Don’t forget! Marin, the bar’s in your hands.

MARIN

Yup! Good luck! Take care!

Cloud and party leave Seventh Heaven. A crowd is gathered around Johnny. Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie are among them. As Cloud approaches, the three Avalanche members run off screen. Also, Item Store is open!

JOHNNY

I’m off on a trip that’ll make me a better man. An’ so… it’s goodbye. Hey, childhood friend, take good care of Tifa for me.

Johnny leaves and his mother, who was watching from the doorway, goes back in the house.

DARK BROWN PONYTAIL NPC

I hope Johnny doesn’t get hurt by some floozy. That’s what’s worrying me most.

GOSSIP NPC

The whole district was listening from outside the bar yesterday. Tifa’s childhood friend… I can’t believe it!

KID NPC

Aww, he’s leaving. Who’ll play tricks with me now?

ITEM STOREKEEPER NPC

…sigh…Another slow day. If this keeps up, my store’s going under. It’s hopeless selling medicine in a slum like this. Oh, would you look at that…? You telling me you’re a customer? Great! Welcome! We sell! We buy!

Returning to Weapon Store.

WEAPON STOREKEEPER NPC

Hm? Hey! You! Let’s see you walk out of here without buying something. That’d be unfortunate… if you catch my drift?

KID WITH RED HAT NPC

Damn, man! Your face looks like a chocobo’s arse! You tired? Well, you can rest up on the third floor if you like. There’s just one condition… You’ll cough up some dough.

CLOUD

  1. 1 gil

  2. 10 gil

  3. Don’t give him a thing

KID WITH RED HAT NPC (1 gil)

Wow! Just forget I said anything!

KID WITH RED HAT NPC (10 gil)

(Oh, man! Now we’re talking!) Help yourself to a bed. Sweet dreams.

KID WITH RED HAT NPC (Don’t give him a thing)

Wow. What a cheapskate.

If Cloud goes up to the third floor with the beds after paying 10 gil.

CLOUD

Hoo… Fade to black.

If Cloud enters the third floor bedroom without paying 10 gil.

KID WITH RED HAT NPC

This is the slums, so don’t expect to stay here for free. What will it be? Doesn’t just looking at that bed make you feel sleepy?

CLOUD

  1. 10 gil

  2. Don’t stay

KID WITH RED HAT NPC (10 gil)

Sweet dreams.

CLOUD

Hoo… Fade to black.

KID WITH THE RED HAT NPC (Don’t stay)

Man, you’re stubborn! Tch! When you can rest…rest. When you can save…save. That’s the law of the slums. Better remember that.

Back on the first floor.

BLACK-HAIRED NPC

Heh, heh. I don’t think you could learn what I know in one evening. Hey, newbie! Sorry…My buddy on the second floor’ll teach ya instead.

Go to second floor. Beginners Hall is now open. A save point hops around and stops in the corner.

MUSCLED WITH HARD HAT NPC

Welcome to the Beginner’s Hall. You say you’re a beginner, but your eyes say you’re not.

CLOUD

Don’t underestimate me. I was in Soldier. I’ll tell you what I know. And for free! What do you wanna know? (Special note: some of the modded explanations are for PC, not PS1)

  1. Recording the journey

  2. Healing a wounded ally

  3. Curative magic

  4. Weapons and armours

  5. Equipping materia

  6. Advanced use of materia

  7. Battle formation

  8. Checking current status

  9. Using Limit skills

  10. Other advice

  11. Nothing left to teach

CLOUD (Recording the journey)

Okay, I’ll tell you about saving. You know what’ll happen if you don’t save? That’s right… Everything you worked so hard to do will be lost! You never know when there’ll be a power outage, And you’ve got a long journey ahead of you. It pays to save ten and to take breaks whenever you need them. You can save your progress in the game on your computer’s hard drive. If you feel like e-mailing any of the save files to your friends, you can find them in the ‘save’ folderin the same place you installed the game.

So, when you’re ready to save, access the menu. Select save. Remember, you can’t just save wherever you want. You can only save at places that have a Save Point. When you find one, a message will appear. Whenever you reach a Save Point, you’ll probably want to save your game.

There are 10 files located in these 2 rows. Choose a file for your current game. Each file can hold up to 15 games. This will save your progress to the computer’s hard drive. The screen only shows 3 saved games at a time, so press the Directions to scroll down the list, and you will see the rest. Remember, the more files you have the longer it will take to load. Well, that used to be the case anyway.

One last thing… Don’t get mad even if you lose. Let your head and your computer cool down. That’s all.

Remember to save often, so you don’t lose your progress.

CLOUD (Healing a wounded ally)

If Cloud doesn’t have a potion.

To explain this, I’m gonna need a Potion.

MUSCLED WITH HARD HAT NPC

Man… Ex-Soldiers sure are cheap. Okay, I’ll give you ONE Potion.

If Cloud has 1 or more potions.

You probably already know this, but… HP is your life force. If all your HP is lost in battle, you are Knocked Out. MP is the source of your magic power. If all your MP is lost, you’ll be unable to cast spells. So, what should we do to cure a wounded ally? There are three ways. First, you can rest up at an inn. Second, you can use items to help them recover. Third, you can use curative magic. I’ll explain magic later, but, for now, let’s talk about items.

Select Item from the menu. A Potion will restore HP. If you can’t find it, access the menu and select Order to change the order of your items. You can arrange them however you like. Order by items that can be used on the field, by items that can be used in battle, or by items that can be thrown in battle. Order weapons and armours separately. Alphabetical order. Order by most items held. Order by least items held.

By the way, Key Items are just what they sound like— items that unlock problems like a key. They’re very important things to have. Keep that in mind.

Okay, now select Use, then select Potion. Select the person you want to give it to. If their HP is maxed out, they won’t be able to use it. MP can be restored with Ethers. Use them in the same way as Potions. Just pick a member! The number appearing next to the item’s name tells you many are available. Of course, the more you use, the fewer you’ll have.

Some enemies will drop Potions or Ethers, but it’s best to stock up whenever you’re at a store. One last thing… If someone in your party gets Knocked Out, either rest at an inn or use a Phoenix Tail. That’s all!

CLOUD (Curative magic)

Here’s how to use curative magic. First, access the menu and select Magic. Next, select who will cast the spell. Pick an ally equipped with Restore materia. You can select another party member by using L1 and R1. This also works in other menus. Remember that.

This is magic that you can cast, beasts that you can summon, and Enemy Skills that you’ve learned.

Whenever Magic is selected, the available spells appear on screen. So, if you need to use Cure,

select it from the menu, and then select the person you want to cast it on.

I think Potions are pretty expensive, so… …I stay at an inn instead. It’s better to use curative magic than Potions. That’s all.

CLOUD (Weapons and armours)

Equipping a weapon and armour is vital for combat. Let me show you how it’s done. Finding or buying them isn’t enough – you also need to access the menu and select Equip. Select the person you want to add equipment to. You can change the weapon, the armour, and the accessory. Accessories have special effects. Select the one you want to change. On the right side of the screen, there’s a list of things that can be equipped. You can see their effects here. Change your weapon with O, then see how it affects your Attack and Defense.

Pay special attention to the materia slots. Only slots that are linked will allow Added Effects. Also check the growth rate of materia.

When you want to remove an accessory, press [triangle] here.

You should never remove weapons or armours, because you’ll never know when you’ll be attacked. After you’ve finished altering equipment, you should re-equip your materia. That’s all.

CLOUD (Equipping materia)

Materia can unleash a hidden power in humans. Let’s see how it’s used… First, access the menu. Then, select Materia. Select who you want to use it.

The left side of the screen shows the effect that materia has on you. It’s wise not to overuse Magic materia. Experiment with it on your own. That’s about it. I’ll explain some of the finer points next.

CLOUD (Advanced use of materia)

Access the menu when you find a materia. There are a lot of different types around. This is one of them. It’s called All. If you equip this on its own, nothing will happen. This is a little tricky, but I’ll tell you anyway… Look at my weapon. Look closely at these two slots. They’re linked together. Remember to put materia into linked slots. Different materias affect one another, but only if the slots are linked.

Just to demonstrate this to you, let’s put an All materia into one of the slots… and a Lightning materia into the one it is linked with. Now, we can use Thunder on all of the enemies, but at the moment that’s limited to once per battle.

Combine different materias, and you’ll come up with different results.

Combining Restore and All… …will allow you to use Cure on your entire party.

There are also many useless combinations… For example, Restore and Lightning. Thunder and Cure can still be used as normal, but there won’t be any Added Ability.

Types like All are known as Support Materia. You can tell the difference just by looking at the colour.

This may sound weird, but… did you know that materia will grow on its own? Even if one of your allies is using it, it will continue to grow with each battle. As its level increases, so too will the effects of the magic.

I told you that All materia works once per battle, but it can work more than once as it grows. If the materia reaches its Master level,

it will divide – almost like it’s giving birth. A mastered materia won’t grow any further.

When you can’t take on any more, you’re better off selling it or dumping it somewhere. The options are here. Tidy your materias, remove all materias from your weapon and armour, or discard a materia. Hey, relax! I’m not going to dump it!

Let’s see, this one’s a special menu. You can exchange the materia you have between allies, even if they’re not in your party.

Now, about growth… The rate that your materia will grow depends on the weapon or armour it is placed into. Some will double the growth, while others won’t allow any growth at all.

In most cases, the materia’s effect won’t change, whether you place it into a weapon or into a armour. But Properties and Added Effects have completely different results depending on where the materia is placed. You’ve got to think about what weapon or armour to use, and which combinations of materia will be the strongest.

I remember hearing once that there are special materias somewhere in the world… Anyway, I think I’ve covered everything.

CLOUD (Battle formation)

Okay, I’ll explain your party’s order in battle. First, access the menu and select Form. Next, select who you want to switch. Now, select the position you desire. This will change the battle formation. It doesn’t provide any advantage or disadvantage.

But when you select the same person twice, it will move them between the front row and the back row in battle. When they’re on the left side of the screen, that’ll be the front row. When they’re on the right, that’ll be the back row. When you’re in the front row and select Attack, you inflict greater damage on the enemy, but the damage you receive is also greater. While in the back row, although you do less damage to the enemy, you also receive less damage.

For magic attacks, there’s no difference in damage between the front row and back row. There will also be no difference when you’re using Long Range weapons. It’s better to keep weaker members

Cloud moves the cursor to Barrett.

in the back row.

Of course, I always use the front row! That’s all.

CLOUD (Checking current status)

Always know your current status. That’s one of the basics of combat. Access the menu and select Status. Next, select the member you want to check up on. Are you surprised at the amount of information? I’ll explain it all. First, these are your Experience Points and Level. The more Experience that you gain in battle, the stronger you’ll become. This tells you how many points you require for the next Level. If you can’t beat stronger enemies, raise your Level by fighting weaker ones first. This will also improve your physical and magical skills.

Next, there’s HP and MP. HP is your life force. If it reaches zero, you’ll be Knocked Out. MP is the source of your magic power. Every time you cast magic, you use MP. If you run out of MP, you’ll no longer be able to cast spells.

You know that battle commands are classed into roughly two groups, right? Attack is used for regular physical attacks, while Magic and Summon are used to cast magical attacks. Magic and Summon materia will have an effect on the strength of your Attack and Defense, among other things.

Your equipment and Experience have a big part to play as well. The total effect is displayed in the list below. These are the commands that you can use in battle, as well as your current weapon, armour, and accessory. Press O one more time. As you can see, there are many types of attack. Some monsters are weak against Fire— others are weak against Lightning. Items and materia can attack with these Properties or protect you from them. This list shows you the Properties that are in use.

Press O one more time. Now the list is showing the Added Effects. Some enemies will use sneaky attacks on you. These attacks change your condition, such as… Sleep, Confusion, Poison, Darkness, Petrification, Silence, Minimum, and Frog. These conditions disappear after each battle, except Anger and Sadness, which will remain.

To cure these conditions, use magic or items. There are specific remedies for each condition.

I know I’m repeating myself, but… when an ally is Knocked Out in battle— that is, when they are almost dead, use a Phoenix Tail or the magic called Rise.

When you change your materia or equipment, it’s a good idea to check the Status menu. Mastering Properties and Added Effects will make your battles safer and easier. That’s all.

CLOUD (Using Limit Skills)

Here are a few hints on Limit skills. When an enemy has pushed you to the limit, you can unleash unimaginable power. You know what I mean, right? The trick is in how to use it. Access the menu, and select Limit. Now, select a member, and decide which Limit level to use. Skills from lower levels are less powerful, but can be used more often. Conversely, skills from higher levels are more powerful, but can be used less often.

By practicing your skills, you will learn how to devise new ones. The type of skills you develop will depend on your fighting style. It’s impossible to predict how you’ll mature. That’s something you’ll have to discover for yourself.

I’ve heard a rumour about secret items that inspire ultimate skills… I don’t know whether or not those items really exist. That’s all! Experiment with everything, and use what works best!

CLOUD (Other advice)

This is common sense, but, just in case, I’ll go over it. Don’t open the CD drive or… Oh… Well, never mind!

Select, “Nothing left to teach” and Cloud doesn’t say anything as the tutorial menu closes. If Cloud talks to the dog, a Basic Controls tutorial begins.

BASIC CONTROLS TEXT BOX (Special Note: Might be for PS3 controller buttons.)

L1/R1 = Turn

[Triangle] = Menu

[D-pad] = Walk

O = Speak/Action

X = Run

How to Restart: Press L1, L2, R1, R2, [Start], and [Select]

How to Quit: Hold down [Select] and [Start] for three seconds. Alternatively, hold Alt and press F4 on your keyboard.

CLOUD

Huh? A finger!? What’s with you?

FINGER

I am the position cursor! Call on me whenever you’re walking around lost. Press [Start] and I’ll follow you around above your spiky, little head.

CLOUD

Geez. You stand out even more than I do.

FINGER

Am I in the way? If so, just press [start] again. It might not look like it, but I’m a pretty busy guy myself, so I can’t show up all the time. Don’t get angry if I’m not around. Well, bye for now!

BASIC CONTROLS TEXT BOX

Position Cursor: Press [Start] when you’re lost. The position cursor will appear. Wait! There’s more! Red triangles mark the exits, and Green triangles mark the ladders. Now, you can keep your cool in dark alleys or on steep mountains! Depending on location, there are times when they won’t appear, so please be careful.

If Cloud goes to pick up the materia in front of man in red jacket, he’ll obtain All materia.

RED JACKET NPC

Wow! You got one right off the bat! That was a materia. Next, open this treasure chest…

Treasure chest falls from the ceiling. Cloud opens it and obtains Ether.

RED JACKET NPC

Now, listen… Hidden in treasure chests are a lot of handy items. They also come in bottles and bags, so make sure you don’t overlook anything.

Inside fenced area, a boy and girl are sparring.

BOY NPC

…pow… …biff…

GIRL NPC

Haalp meeee!

CLOUD

You’ve got to hang in there. Your Limit gauge is building up.

GIRL NPC

Eyaaah!!

CLOUD

Okay! Now your Limit gauge is full! Don’t hold back! Use your Limit skill!

Girl starts to glow and then pummels the boy, knocking down the boy.

CLOUD

Well done!

Boy gets back up. Boy and girl resume a sparring stance.

BOY NPC

Magic!! Magic!!

GIRL NPC

Haalp meee!

CLOUD

Calm down! When your opponent uses magic, counter with Magic Barrier or Reflect. Magic Barrier halves the damage received from magic. Reflect bounces magic back, but the number of times it will do this is limited, so be careful.

Girl starts to glow and uses Reflect, knocking down the boy.

CLOUD

Well done!

Boy gets back up. Boy and girl resume a sparring stance.

BOY NPC

Wow! You weally was in Soldier. I’m gonna get stwong, too. No matter what!

GIRL NPC

No matter what!

CLOUD

If you want to be as strong as me, you’ll need to nurture materia properly, and find the best combinations. Your weapon and armour will determine the speed of any materia growth. Depending on how you use the open slots, the combinations are endless. That’s about all the advice I can give. If you don’t have the natural talent, you will never be like me.

GIRL NPC and BOY NPC

I don’t get it!

CLOUD

Look, kids, don’t piss me off! Just give it a try. Sooner or later, you WILL get it.

The kids shrug and go back to sparring positions. Above the kids are three men doing muscle flexing poses.

THREE FLEXING NPCs

Hey there, wise ex-Soldier… Please teach us three about combat. We’ll make it worth your while!

CLOUD

I’m not hard up enough to make money from you guys, but I’ll rap with you for a bit. What do you want to know?

  1. ATB

  2. Numbers that appear

  3. Change and Defend

  4. Escape

  5. The gauges

  6. Status

  7. Properties

  8. My help

  9. Sorry, I’m done

CLOUD (ATB)

ATB, or Active Time Battle, refers to the system of time flow. If you select Wait, under ATB in the Config menu, time will stop while you choose magic or items. This makes it easier to select commands. Perfect for beginners like you. Similarly, if you set ATB to Recommended, time will stop during item and magic effects. This means you can easily keep an eye on the battle situation. Select this if you’re feeling pressured, okay? Personally, I always go with Active, but just pick whichever suits you.

CLOUD (Numbers that appear)

During battle, while numbers represent damage, and green numbers represent recovery. If you don’t want to be Wiped Out, you’d best pay attention to them.

CLOUD (Change and Defend)

The Change command can swap characters between the front and back row. In the back row, you take less damage, but your attack power is also reduced. Change can be selected by pressing [left on D-pad] in the command window. Pressing [right on D-pad] will access Defend. Selecting Defend reduces the damage you receive by half, until the next turn. If you’re up against a strong enemy, don’t hesitate to use this. Of course, I never need to.

CLOUD (Escape)

I don’t use the Escape command, so I can’t remember all the details. But…you guys will probably need it. Hold L1 and R1. That should allow you to escape from battle.

CLOUD (The gauges)

You can’t check this at the moment, so it might be hard to understand, but listen up. I’ll tell you about the various gauges that are displayed during battle. The Time gauge represents the time remaining until your next turn. When a gauge is full, you can make a command. If you don’t want to make one, you can press [triangle] and switch to the next ally. It’s convenient when you want to make Barrett move his lazy arse.

The Limit gauge increases each time you sustain damage. Once it is full, you can use a Limit skill. The gauge isn’t cleared after a battle, so it will build up over time. You shouldn’t use your Limit skill just because the gauge is full, either. It goes without saying that choosing the right moment to use it is critical.

You probably don’t know this, so I’ll tell you. There are two status conditions known as Anger and Sadness. Anger causes your Limit gauge to build up faster, but your attack accuracy is reduced. Sadness causes your Limit gauge to fill up more slowly, but any damage you receive is reduced.

The Barrier gauge represents two spells. The top bar displays Barrier: magic which protects against physical attacks. The bottom bar displays Magic Barrier: magic which protects against magical attacks. Both will halve damage respectively until their effect wears off. When you use spells that enable Barrier and Magic Barrier, remember to pay close attention to the gauges. That’s all there is to it. Check it out in your next battle.

CLOUD (Status)

Status means just that – the status of each character. I’ll probably wind up repeating myself, but let me go over this with you.

Sleep: You are unable to perform any action until you wake up.

Poison: Your HP is steadily depleted.

Anger: Quicker to reach your Limit, but attacks are less accurate. Cured with a Tranquilizer.

Sadness: Less damage is received, but it takes longer to reach you Limit. Cured with a Stimulant.

Petrification: You are turned into stone and cannot move. If the whole party is petrified, you are Wiped Out.

Confusion: You lose your mind and are unable to distinguish friend from foe.

Silence: You are unable to cast magic.

Paralysis: The Time gauge is frozen and command input disabled.

Berserk: You lose all control and attack wildly. Your attacks will be more powerful, however.

Minimum: You are reduced in size. Attacks will be ineffective.

Darkness: The accuracy of physical attacks is reduced.

Frog: You are turned into a frog. I hate it when this happens.

Phew… I’m beat. Status abnormalities can be cured with magic or items. It’s a good idea to check on your status before buying anything.

CLOUD (Properties)

Properties are the special abilities available to magic and weapons. They are essential for effective combat. If you can use Properties, then you’re already a competent fighter. I’ll give you a few examples. Just examples, mind you, so don’t swallow this whole.

Fire: Fire effect. Works well against beasts and Ice enemies.

Ice: Ice effect. Works well against Fire and Ice-fearing enemies.

Lightning: Electric effect. Works well against mechanical enemies.

Earth: The power of the land. No effect against flying enemies.

Poison: Inflicts Poison status. No effect against Poison-based enemies.

Gravity: An attack using gravity. This will hurt if it hits.

Water: Water – the planet’s blessing. Works well against Fire enemies.

Wind: Awakens the heavens. Works well against flying enemies.

Holy: Unlocks the planet’s power. Works well against dark monsters.

Using opposite Properties in your attacks can have powerful results. But be careful, because they can sometimes have a negative effect as well. You can use opposites to increase the efficiency of your defense. To see what Properties an enemy is weak against, you will need to use Sense. If you get ahold of that materia, you should definitely give this a shot.

CLOUD (My help)

There’s not much I can do if you’re unable to grasp my explanations. You must lack the brains for this. Well, don’t worry. Guys like you should press [start] during battle. The help message will do the rest. It can also show you the name of the enemy, so even I use it once in a while. Don’t be afraid to.

Select “Sorry, I’m done” and tutorials end.

WOMAN BY SAVE POINT NPC

This is the so-called Save Point! You can save your progress with it, or rest up using a Tent. They also have another use, but it’s a secret for now… <3 Something to look forward to, huh? <3

If you get Wiped Out, you can start over from the Save Point. So, there’s no need to worry, even in a hopeless situation. This is jumping the gun a bit, but, when you leave Midgar… …the world map allows you to save anywhere. Remember that.

An image of the save point fills the screen.

SAVE POINT

Hello, I am the aforementioned Save Point. I believe we shall meet again somewhere along the road. I look forward to seeing you then!

A treasure chest drops down in place of the save point.

TREASURE CHEST

And I’m the treasure chest!! You buncha beginners better make sure to keep your eyes peeled for me!!

Head back outside and into Johnny’s House.

JOHNNY'S DAD NPC

Ho…Has my son set off yet? With just the wife and I, it’s going to be pretty lonely here. Ho…He’s still young and should follow his heart. Still, we can’t help but worry. I guess we weren’t ready for this. By the way, where are you from?

CLOUD

  1. A village called Nibelheim

  2. I stopped caring about things like that a long time ago

JOHNNY"S DAD NPC (A village called Nibelheim)

Oh… Nibelheim. Wasn’t it in the news a few years back? An accident involving a Mako reactor…? Yes, I remember now. It was the first major accident involving a reactor. Everyone was talking about it.

JOHNNY'S DAD NPC (I stopped caring about things like that a long time ago)

Hoho… Well, there’s nothing wrong with that, I suppose. But if you still have family, you ought to write to them once in a while. Even if you act like you don’t care, your family are always there for you. Hoho…That’s how it is, you know.

JOHNNY'S DAD NPC

Ho, well… Would you mind leaving the two of us alone now? I want to enjoy some quiet time with my wife.

JOHNNY'S MOM NPC

He gave us nothing but trouble, but now that he’s gone, we miss him. Strange isn’t it?

Back outside.

KID NPC (Standing right outside Seventh Heaven’s door.)

Aww! I can get this far, but then I’m too scared to ask her. I’m still just a no-good kid.

GOSSIP NPC

Hmph. What’s the point in getting all of this juicy gossip if no one’ll listen to it? Hey, ‘I’m-not-interested’, next time I’ll have something that WILL pique your curiosity. You just see if I don’t!

DARK BROWN PONYTAIL NPC

Eeeeh, that swine, Johnny… Gone. Just like that. Years of rivalry… Truth is I’m a lonely guy when I’m not drinking.

Heading towards the train station, where the two guards are located.

GUARD 1 NPC

Halt! No entry!

GUARD 2 NPC

Sir, I’ve got some tickets for Loveless. Wanna go?

GUARD 1 NPC

Are you joking? Midgar’s on high alert!

GUARD 2 NPC

Are you saying that you’re worried about me?

GUARD 1 NPC

Hell, no! But, in case you’ve forgotten, those terrorists are lurking in the slums. We can’t let our guard down for a single second.

GUARD 2 NPC

What? Avalanche? They’re nothing to worry about. Soldier’s been deployed, remember? Boy, a Soldier mobilization. Been a while… Right, sir? You know, I flunked the Soldier exam. Did I ever tell you that?

GUARD 1 NPC

Damn right you did – you never stop babbling! Think you can shut up for once and concentrate on work?

GUARD 2 NPC

…sigh… (I wonder which is worse, Avalanche or the boss… Yeah, definitely the Boss!)

Continuing on to the train station. Biggs, Jessie, and Wedge stand outside the train. They board the train as you approach. Lovey dovey couple stands under the streetlamp.

MAN NPC

I’ve had enough of this.

WOMAN NPC

Me too.

MAN NPC

You know, this is the first time we’ve ever agreed on something…

WOMAN NPC

Well?

MAN NPC

Yeah…

WOMAN NPC

Well?

They attempt to embrace each other, but fall over in exhaustion.

WOMAN NPC

…snore…

MAN NPC

…zzZ…

TRAIN ATTENDANT

Good morning. It’s a new day, but nothing’s changed, has it? You be careful. Come on back, you hear? ALL ABOARD! The train is about to depart.

Cloud and party board the train and the attendant shuts the train car door.
