fort condor: huge materia

With Fort Condor being optional until this point, it is possible for this to be the party's first visit.

If this is the first visit to Fort Condor, Man NPC will stand at the front entrance.

MAN NPC

Our people have been in an armed struggle for a LONG time. We’ve taken root here and vowed to keep on fighting. Whenever you can spare the time, please come lend us a hand. We don’t want to be unreasonable. If you’re busy with something, why don’t you tend to that first?

CID

  1. We’d like to help, but…

  2. Let’s kick some ass

MAN NPC (We’d like to help, but…)

All right, take care.

MAN NPC (Let’s kick some ass)

Great! Come on up, and we’ll brief you.

Man NPC enters and the party follows.

Cid and the party climb all the way up to the top to find Man NPC inside of a guardhouse and looking out the window.

MAN NPC

You here to see it too?

CID

See what?

MAN NPC

The condor. It’s huge. Go ahead. Take a look.

Looking out the window, a huge condor is resting on top of the Mako reactor that sits on top of the hill. Screen fades back to inside the shack.

MAN NPC

What do you think? Incredible, huh?

Cid and the party climb back down and talk to Man With Hat NPC.

MAN WITH HAT NPC

Wow, it’s not every day you see people climbing up here. Listen, this is about to turn into a battlefield with Shin-Ra. You best go back down if you don’t want to get involved.

CID

A battlefield? Is that all you’ve got? Give us the rest!

BARRETT

What’re they doin’ here?

NANAKI

Shin-Ra again.

YUFFIE

Shin-Ra? They’re here too?

CAIT

VINCENT

Explain.

MAN WITH HAT NPC

Looks like you’re also having problems with them. You came here, after all. Will you hear what I have to say?

CID

Sure!

MAN WITH HAT NPC

Did you notice anything on top of this mountain?

BARRETT

Huh? Somethin’s up there?

YUFFIE

We’re not blind, gramps!

CAIT

Aye, come tae think o’ it, there was somethin’.

CID

I saw a reactor. And was that a condor on top of it?

MAN WITH HAT NPC

Hah, well spotted! Yes, it’s a reactor and a condor. It seems there’s some sort of special materia in the reactor. And because there’s a condor ‘in the way’, Shin-Ra rushed their army here to deal with it. The army’s objective is to eliminate the condor and those living here, and to remove the materia from the reactor. The thing is, we don’t have the resources to fight Shin-Ra directly. That’s why we’ve hired mercenaries to help us. As a sponsor, you can assist us with money or by fighting alongside us. What do you think? Will you join us in our struggle?

CID

Well, when you put it like that… Leave it to us! We’ll think of somethin’!

BARRETT

Yeah, we’ll sort it out!

NANAKI

Yeah, let’s help them out!

YUFFIE

Excellent! We’ve scored the materia!

CAIT

Well, then, let’s get craken’.

VINCENT

You have made the right decision.

If Cid talks to Man With Hat NPC again…

MAN WITH HAT NPC

I’m begging you… Don’t let them destroy the reactor or kill the condor!

Cid and the others climb back up to the Man NPC in the guardhouse.

MAN NPC

Okay, I’ll explain the strategy. The enemy is climbing the mountain. Their target is the Mako reactor. To counter them, we set traps and hire mercenaries. That’s about all there is to it. Sadly, the village is broke. We want to fight, but without funding we haven’t got a prayer. It costs at least 400 gil to hire a mercenary. So, hiring 20 mercenaries will cost 8000 or more. To cut a long story short, we need your money to hire mercenaries, buy and set the traps, and to give out orders. We know we’re asking a hell of a lot. We’ve sent our loved ones to another village and stayed behind to face the fire. Anyway, let’s get right to it. If the enemy reaches this shack, you’ll have to fend them off yourself in direct combat. It’s a one shot gamble, but you’re all we’ve got. Do you have any questions?

CID

  1. How do I win?

  2. Tell me about the enemy

  3. What units are for hire?

  4. Explain funding to me

  5. Anything else?

  6. That’s enough

MAN NPC (How do I win?)

If you wipe out the enemy or defeat the commanding officer, victory will be yours. If the enemy reaches this shack, you’ll have no choice but to fight them yourself. If you lose that battle and the Mako reactor is captured, we might still be able to recover. But how long we could hold them off for I can’t say. Should that fail, we’ll probably be killed along with the condor. And Shin-Ra will take the materia from the reactor.

MAN NPC (Tell me about the enemy)

There are four types of enemy.

CID

  1. Wyverns

  2. Beasts

  3. Barbarians

  4. Commanders

  5. Anything else? (When selected, dialogue goes to previous menu)

MAN NPC (Wyverns)

Wyverns are flying units that can move at high speed. Stoners and Tristoners aren’t very effective against them.

MAN NPC (Beasts)

Beasts are monster units that move pretty slowly. On the other hand, they’re quite powerful.

MAN NPC (Barbarians)

Barbarians are human units. They attack indirectly, so you’ve got to be on your toes.

MAN NPC (Commanders)

Commanders are the enemy commanding officers. Taking them out is ideal, but they’ll prove formidable foes.

MAN NPC (What units are for hire?)

The mobile units are: Fighters, Attackers, Defenders, Shooters, Repairers, and Workers.

The stationary units are: Stoners, Tristoners, Catapults, and Bomb Catapults.

What do you want to hear about?

CID

  1. Mobile units

  2. Stationary units

  3. Something else (If selected, dialogue goes back to previous menu)

MAN NPC (Mobile units)

Which ones?

CID

  1. Fighters

  2. Attackers

  3. Defenders

  4. Shooters

  5. Repairers

  6. Workers

  7. Something else (If selected, dialogue goes back to previous menu)

MAN NPC (Fighters)

Fighters strike a good balance between offense and defence. At the same time, they have no real strengths or weaknesses.

MAN NPC (Attackers)

Attackers move quickly and are well suited for the front line. They are strong against Beasts, but have trouble with Barbarians.

MAN NPC (Defenders)

Defenders are powerful but slow and are more suited to defence. They are strong against Barbarians, but not Wyverns.

MAN NPC (Shooters)

Shooters can attack indirectly, but have low endurance. They are strong against Wyverns, but weak against Beasts.

MAN NPC (Repairers)

Repairers can heal allies, but they have very little strength.

MAN NPC (Workers)

Workers can set land mines. The mines are powerful, but the Workers are weak. Mines explode when they come into contact with an enemy. The explosion will also damage anything in the immediate area.

MAN NPC (Stationary units)

Which ones?

CID

  1. Stoners

  2. Tristoners

  3. Catapults

  4. Bomb Catapults

  5. Something else (If selected, dialogue goes back to previous menu)

MAN NPC (Stoners)

Stoners can drop a single boulder. The boulder will damage all enemies in its path.

MAN NPC (Tristoners)

Tristoners can drop three boulders simultaneously. The boulders will damage all enemies in their path.

MAN NPC (Catapults)

Catapults can throw rocks a great distance. Enemies in the way will be injured.

MAN NPC (Bomb Catapults)

Bomb Catapults can throw Bombs a great distance. Enemies in the way will be injured.

MAN NPC (Explain funding to me)

Our current funds stand at 0 gil. We need about 3000 gil per battle. How much can you contribute?

CID

  1. 500 gil

  2. 1000 gil

  3. 2000 gil

  4. 3000 gil

  5. 5000 gil

  6. Nothing right now (If selected, dialogue goes back to previous menu)

MAN NPC (Any gil option)

Thanks. We now have [TOTAL] gil.

If party does not have enough for a donation…

We’re very grateful, but it looks like you don’t have a lot of money either.

If party donates multiple times…

That’s more than enough, but if we run out, we may need to rely on your hospitality again.

MAN NPC (Anything else?)

The first thing you need to do is station friendly troops. Move the cursor to a position not marked by X, and press O. If you’re finished with deployment, you can end with X. The battle will then begin. At first, troops can only be deployed near the shack. If they’re too far away, your orders won’t reach them. You can deploy units up until the line at the bottom. Press [select] to view information on issuing orders. If a unit reports in, press O, and the cursor will move to them. Press X to ignore the report. Shin-Ra dispatches units periodically, so it’d be perfect if you came back here from time to time. If you can’t make it, then might we rely on your financial assistance instead?

MAN NPC (That’s enough)

Are you ready?

CID

  1. No, not yet (If selected, nothing happens.)

  2. Yeah, ready

  3. Hear instructions (If selected, dialogue goes back to previous menu.)

MAN NPC (Yeah, ready)

This will settle things once and for all. There are more enemies out there than ever before.

If Fort Condor has funds remaining…

We’ll hand over all the money we have. Now, let’s give it everything we’ve got!

Obtained __ gil!

If this isn’t the first visit to Fort Condor…

MAN WITH HAT NPC

You’ve come at the right time. Shin-Ra changed their strategy. They’re trying to destroy the reactor, so they can take the materia from it.

BARRETT

Man, we’re on dangerous ground.

NANAKI

We can’t lose now!

YUFFIE

If we lose now, the materia I’ve dreamed about is history.

CAIT

If we mess up now, things willnae look good at all.

VINCENT

We must hold the fort.

CID

Hell, is anywhere safe from Shin-Ra!?

Cid and the others climb back up to the Man NPC in the guardhouse.

MAN NPC

Their strategy has changed. They’re making a final push. It’s do or die. Our lives are in your hands. We’re counting on you. Are you ready?

CID

  1. No, not yet (If selected, nothing happens.)

  2. Yeah, ready

  3. Hear instructions

Obtained __ gil!

A lengthy battle against Shin-Ra begins…

If Cid and the others win the battle…

MAN NPC

YES! We did it! That was terrific! Well done! Shin-Ra won’t trouble us ever again!!

Man NPC laughs, turns to look back out the window, and gasps.

A-argh…!

Outside, the condor's egg begins to crack. An energy barrier forms around the egg and condor. A blazing light explodes from the egg, engulfing the condor. The barrier drops and the condor falls backwards with a cry off of the top of the reactor.

MAN NPC

Th-that light just now? The condor… The egg… S-sorry. Would you check on things for me?

Cid goes outside and finds the baby condor hatched and preening itself. On the ground by the hatched egg is a red materia. As Cid approaches, the baby condor takes off in flight. Obtained Phoenix materia! Cid goes back inside the guardhouse to speak with Man NPC.

MAN NPC

It’s gone. Thanks again for all your help. Be sure to report to my father.

Cid and the others go back down and speak to Man With Hat NPC.

MAN WITH HAT NPC

Thank you all. I really mean it. Thank you all so much. I have nothing to offer, but feel free to stop by anytime. Oh yes, I forgot…

Obtained Key Item Huge Materia!

CID

Huh? What’s up with this?

BARRETT

Whoa, this really is huge.

YUFFIE

Now we’re talkin’! THIS is what I call materia!

CAIT

Hmm… So, this is the materia…

VINCENT

So, this is the materia…

MAN WITH HAT NPC

The truth is, this is the materia that was inside the reactor.

CID

Then what the hell were we fighting for?

MAN WITH HAT NPC

We weren’t protecting the reactor at all. We were protecting the condor. When the reactor was being built, they forced us to help. That’s how we knew what was inside. We knew this day would come, so after Shin-Ra left, we sneaked in and took the materia. We didn’t mean to deceive you, but I guess that’s how it turned out. I’m really sorry.

CID

Just forget about it. We’re still alive, aren’t we?

MAN WITH HAT NPC

I see. Thanks for looking at it like that. We’re very grateful.

If Cid and the others have already visited Corel, more dialogue happens.

Special Note: There’s a small chunk of dialogue about the Junon Underwater Reactor that appears to have been cut here. This was probably to handle a continuity issue in OG where they didn’t know about the reactor, which is why the party tackled Corel and Fort Condor first. Yet, Cid suddenly mentions it here without explanation for why he knows now.

CID

We’ve been interferin’ a lot lately. Shin-Ra’s bound to be on high alert. How about we leave this for now and check up on the little fella?

BARRETT

You mean Cloud?

NANAKI

You mean Cloud?

YUFFIE

Cloud?

CAIT

Cloud?

CID

Yeah, but I’m also worried Tifa might’ve collapsed. Let’s head down to Midhir!

The party climbs down to the bottom of the fort.

If the enemy forces reach the guardhouse…

MAN NPC

My god, they’ve broken through! It’s all up to you now!

The party runs outside to fight the commander.

If they defeat the commander…

MAN NPC

YES! We did it! That was terrific! Well done! Shin-Ra won’t trouble us ever again!!

If they lose the battle against the commander, Cid will walk back into the guardhouse and then collapse backwards…

MAN NPC

If only they could have been spared…

Screen fades to black and Cid and the others are passed out at the bottom of Fort Condor. The rope that lead up into the fort has disappeared. Cid stands up.

Special Note: Same as if the party wins, the dialogue about the Junon Underwater Reactor seems to have been removed.

CID

Shit… What the hell happened!? Where is everyone!?

The first party member stands up...

BARRETT

Man. What a mess. We’re the only ones who made it.

NANAKI

We didn’t have what it took.

YUFFIE

At least we’re still alive…

CAIT

Things sure arenae goin’ our way.

VINCENT

Life can be unforgiving.

The second party member stands up....

Special Note: Same lines. Only the moment when they say their line changes.

BARRETT

Man. What a mess. We’re the only ones who made it.

NANAKI

We didn’t have what it took.

YUFFIE

At least we’re still alive…

CAIT

Things sure arenae goin’ our way.

VINCENT

Life can be unforgiving.

CID

We don’t need this, dammit!

If Cid and the group have also been to Corel…

CID

We’ve been interferin’ a lot lately… Shin-Ra’s bound to be on high alert. How about we leave this for now and check up on the little fella?

BARRETT

You mean Cloud?

NANAKI

You mean Cloud?

YUFFIE

Cloud?

CAIT

Cloud?

CID

Yeah, but I’m also worried Tifa might’ve collapsed. Let’s head down to Midhir!

If they return to the Highwind cockpit and have not yet gone to Corel…

CID

Where to next? The Corel reactor?

If they return to the Highwind cockpit after having been to both Corel and Fort Condor...

CID

Ya know…

Cid taps the back of his head.

It’s tough bein’ leader.

Cid shakes his head.

Cloud actually did a good job. Sheesh! Let’s get to Midhir an’ check on things.

BARRETT

Yo! Wanna take a peek at what Tifa an’ Cloud are up to?

NANAKI

Hey, Cid, I wonder how Cloud and Tifa are doing…

CAIT

Shin-Ra’s… quiet. But we’ve got tae be careful. Ah juist know that Heidegger an’ the gang are plottin’ somethin’.

VINCENT

You look exhausted. Time, perhaps, to relinquish your position as leader?

TRAINEE PILOT (LV 7)

Yargh! We’re leaving!?

CID

  1. Yeah! Go!

  2. No (If selected, nothing happens.)

TRAINEE PILOT (LV 7) (Yeah! Go!)

Yargh! We’re off!

After taking off, if returning to the Highwind cockpit area…

NANAKI

Cloud… I wonder how he’s doing. Nanaki briefly crosses his arms. Maybe Tifa needs a break, too. I wouldn’t mind caring for him instead.
