corel prison

Cloud finds himself in a dirty town below the Gold Saucer, having been dropped there by Dio. He stands up and shakes himself off.

AERITH

Are you all right?

TIFA

Cloud, are you all right?

RED

Are you all right?

YUFFIE

Hey, you okay?

CLOUD

Where are we?

CAIT

A desert prison… Corel Prison.

CLOUD

A desert prison?

CAIT

Aye. This place is surrounded entirely by quicksand. Ah heard that once ye get in, ye never get oot. But ah remember there bein’ some sort o’ special dispensation…

The other party member turns around to notice Barrett.

AERITH

Oh! Barrett!

TIFA

Barret!?

RED

Hm!? Isn’t that Barrett?

YUFFIE

Hey… isn’t that Barrett?

They run over to Barrett, who is standing in front of a body.

CLOUD

Barrett…

Barrett turns around to face them.

Did you…?

Barrett begins to back away.

BARRETT

Stay back! This is somethin’ I gotta deal with! Jus’ leave me alone.

Barrett runs away.

CAIT

Whew! He a friend o” yours? Sure looks dangerous.

AERITH

Cloud, what should we do? Barrett’s not himself.

TIFA

No… Barrett…

RED

Barrett…

YUFFIE

Hey, Cloud! Let’s just leave him alone. I mean, he told us to, didn’t he? Right?

Cloud can now explore Corel Prison. If he checks the body…

CLOUD

He’s been shot too.

MAN IN FRONT OF GATE NPC

Woo-hoooo! Hahahahaha! Welcome to Corel Prison!

If Cloud talks to him again…

No, no, no. If you wanna pass through here, you’re gonna need the boss’ permission.

If Cloud tries to run off into the desert...

CLOUD

We should find Barrett before we go out into the desert.

As Cloud and the others begin to follow Barrett, a man will follow them.

FOLLOWING THUG NPC

Heh, heh, heh.

If the Following Thug NPC catches up with the group, they will have to fight a couple of bandits. A man with a mohawk stands by a Save Point.

MAN WITH MOHAWK NPC

I’ll tell you one thing, rookie… That desert is dangerous all right. It’ll welcome you in with open arms, but it’s less than sympathetic when you want to leave. On the other hand, it doesn’t take kindly to uninvited guests trying to find their way in. Or so they say. It’s best to just stay away from the desert entirely.

Another man stands by a Gold Saucer sign, wearing sunglasses. Next to him, are three men sitting on the ground.

MAN IN SUNGLASSES NPC

Pointing at the three men.

Those guys over there only tell lies. ONLY lies. Not one of ‘em will tell ya the truth. Just try talkin’ to ‘em… You’ll soon get sick of it.

LIAR 1 NPC

This place is heaven.

LIAR 2 NPC

This place is heaven.

LIAR 3 NPC

This place is heaven.

LIAR 1 NPC

Man with a gun on his arm? Never heard of him.

LIAR 2 NPC

Never heard of him.

LIAR 3 NPC

Never heard of him.

LIAR 1 NPC

You wanna meet the boss? Maybe you’ll find him if you keep heading southwest?

LIAR 2 NPC

Maybe you’ll find him.

LIAR 3 NPC

Maybe you’ll find him.

LIAR 1 NPC

Once you’re in the desert, sit still and wait.

LIAR 2 NPC

Sit still and wait.

LIAR 3 NPC

Sit still and wait.

LIAR 1 NPC

There’s no way you’ll ever see a mysterious chocobo carriage. No way.

LIAR 2 NPC

No way.

LIAR 3 NPC

No way.

MAN NEAR MAIN BUILDING NPC

This elevator goes to the top. But only those chosen for the Chocobo Races are allowed on it.

When heading further south, the former Corel Mayor’s house sits to the right and a semi-truck, with the side open and two guards outside of it, sits to the left. A big man stands in the middle space between the two.

BIG MAN NPC

Want to enter the Chocobo Races?

CLOUD

  1. I’m not interested

  2. Yeah

BIG MAN NPC (I’m not interested)

Thinking of living here forever? Well, let’s see how long you last!

BIG MAN NPC (Yeah)

Then go get the boss’ permission.

CLOUD

Who’s the boss?

BIG MAN NPC

Whaat!? You don’t even know that? Oh, man.

If Cloud approaches the driver’s cabin of the semi…

CLOUD

Looks like we can take a quick nap here.

  1. Sleep (If selected, screen fades to black.)

  2. Don’t sleep (If selected, nothing happens.)

As Cloud approaches the side of the semi, the guards will face him.

COATES’ LACKEY

You new here? Then go pay your respects to Mr Coates.

Inside the semi…

COATES

Never seen your face around here before. Looking to go up?

CLOUD

  1. I’m not interested

  2. Yeah. Up.

COATES (I’m not interested)

Heh, heh, heh. Playing it safe, eh!?

COATES (Yeah. Up.)

You don’t seem to understand how things work down here. This is the Gold Saucer’s garbage dump, which makes you guys the trash. The only way to get on the outside it to win at the Chocobo Races. But it’s not like you rookies can expect to take part that easy. ‘Course, if you got the boss’ blessing, it’d be a different story. But you’ll never get that! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Below the Mayor’s old house, sits the prison’s pub.

GENERAL STOREKEEPER NPC

A rookie? Then you gotta buy somethin’. Yep, that’s the rule here.

Cloud, Cait, and the other party member finally enter the Mayor’s old house. Cloud looks around at the old wreckage of the former living room. Barrett storms inside.

BARRETT

Didn’t I tell you not to follow me!?

Barrett aims his gun arm in their direction.

CAIT

Ju…juist hold oan a wee sec! We only wantae talk! Ye’ll understand if ye juist hear us oot!

Barrett begins shooting as the group braces themselves to prepare for being shot. A man behind the couch near them collapses. Barrett faces away from the group.

BARRETT

Didn’t want none of ya involved.

Cloud shrugs and the other group members run inside.

AERITH

Hey, that’s Cloud’s line! It’s too dangerous. I can’t let you get involved’… Blah, blah, blah.

TIFA

Yeah. It’s a little late for that now.

Special Note: These next two lines are usually from Aerith. But if Aerith is the third party member, then it goes to Tifa.

AERITH or TIFA

We found out what happened and asked to come down here.

AERITH

Come on, Barrett. We need to know what’s bothering you.

TIFA

Come on, Barrett. Tell us what’s going on.

BARRETT

Guys…

RED

They’re saying that the murders at the Battle Arena were caused by a man with a gun on his arm. …Was it you?

Barrett shakes his head, then looks up, recalling.

BARRETT

There’s another—another man with a gun on his arm. It was four years ago…

The screen whites out and changes to a flashback. Barrett and Dyne are walking along the train tracks that lead to North Corel.

BARRETT

That day… I was on my way back home after visitin’ the Mako reactor under construction.

The mayor runs toward them.

MAYOR NPC

Barrett! Dyne! Come quick! The village is under attack! It’s Shin-Ra soldiers!

BARRETT

WHAT!?

Barrett and Dyne nod at one another before running to the cliffside. From there, they can see their village burning. Barrett shouts into the sky.

BARRETT

What the hell happened!?

Barrett falls to his knees. Dyne looks away. Barrett pounds his fist against the rock. Dyne puts his hand on Barrett’s back and tries to shake him.

DYNE

Hey, Barrett, it’s not over yet! They’re countin’ on us! We gotta head back to the village!

The screen changes back to the train tracks. The mayor is standing on them facing Barrett and Dyne. A Shin-Ra Infantryman runs up.

MAYOR NPC

Barrett! Dyne! Protect the village!

The infantryman shoots the mayor in the back as he tries to run away. Three more Shin-Ra infantrymen approach.

BARRETT

NO!

The infantrymen begin shooting. Barrett dodges the bullets, while Dyne runs ahead. Dyne turns around to face Barrett.

DYNE

Come on, Barrett! We gotta hurry!

Dyne continues running on ahead.

BARRETT

Krgh…!!

Barrett runs after Dyne, who has stopped behind cover to wait for him.

DYNE

Barrett! Hang in there!

BARRETT

Shu’up!!

Scarlet approaches the infantrymen.

SCARLET

Kya, ha, ha, ha, ha! You could shoot all day with those rusty pieces of crap and still miss every time!

Scarlet takes out her own gun and pushes one of the infantrymen off of the train track. The other three infantrymen stand with their hands in the air.

SCARLET

Kya, ha, ha! Stop playing around and cover me!

Scarlet and the infantrymen begin to aim their weapons at Barret and Dyne.

DYNE

Watch out!!

Dyne jumps in front of Barrett, gets shot, and falls over the cliff edge. Barrett catches Dyne by the hand.

BARRETT

Dyne! Don’t you dare let go! D’ya hear me? You’re comin’ back to the village!

DYNE

Yeah… I’m not letting go… We’re going home to our village… Everybody’s waiting… Eleanor… Marin… They’re all waiting for……

Scarlett begins shooting. The spray of bullets crosses to where Barrett and Dyne’s hands are joined, causing Barrett to lose his grip. Dyne falls into the ravine. The scene changes back to Barrett and the others in the living room.

BARRETT

After that, my right arm was next to useless. I thought things through… …an’ decided to have it removed, so I could get this gun attached. Got a new right arm to get revenge on Shin-Ra, who took everythin’ away from me… Back then, the doc told me there was another guy who wanted the same operation. ‘Cept his was the left arm.

CLOUD

Crossing his arms.

AERITH

But… doesn’t that mean Dyne feels the same way you do?

TIFA

Yeah, that’s right. He was deceived by Shin-Ra too. I’m sure he’ll join us in our fight against them.

BARRETT

Dunno. But I do know I gotta ‘pologize to Dyne. So… let me handle this.

Cloud shrugs.

CLOUD

Do whatever you want. …At least, that’s what I’d like to say. But I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night knowing I left you to die here.

AERITH

Barrett, it doesn’t have to end this way.

TIFA

Yeah, weren’t we going to save the planet?

BARRETT

Hah! Tifa… You oughta know me better than that by now. It might look like I’m doin’ it for the planet, but all I’m really after is revenge against Shin-Ra. I wanna settle the score!

TIFA

It’s all right. I’m not so different myself.

AERITH

It’s easy to understand why you feel that way.

CLOUD

So, Barrett, I guess it’ll be you, me, and…

Cloud chooses the third party member.

Special Note: If Cloud talks to the group members again, he can keep switching out the third party member.

AERITH

Do you think Dyne will join us?

TIFA

Be careful, okay?

RED

Hm? Shall I go with you?

YUFFIE

You guys are weird. None of this is gonna make us any richer whatsoever.

CAIT

Yer fortune looks good… Everythin’ should turn oot grand!

As Cloud and group head toward the north gate, they find Man In Front Of Gate NPC lying on the ground. The gate that he was guarding is now wide open.

CLOUD

Bends down to check the body.

He’s been shot too.

Cloud and the others head through the gate in the direction of the desert. A man is walking back and forth near the desert ravine.

WALKING MAN NPC

Man, the boss is really in a foul mood today. Or maybe that’s him in a good mood? If you get lost in the desert, you gotta keep moving northeast. If you’re lucky, you’ll make it back here.

If Cloud gets lost in the desert, a mysterious chocobo carriage will appear.

CARRIAGE DRIVER NPC

Wanna ride?

CLOUD

  1. Yeah (If selected, Cloud rides the carriage back to where the Walking Man NPC is located.)

  2. I’ll pass (If selected, the carriage leaves.)

Cloud and group run past Walking Man NPC to the west along the ravine. They enter a junkyard with old broken-down cars. Crossing the junkyard, they come up to a destroyed house. Barrett steps forward and motions for the others to stay back. As Barrett walks closer to the origin of the gun shots, two crude grave markers are backed up next to the ravine. Dyne is sitting slumped on the larger grave and firing his gun arm into the air.

BARRETT

Dyne… is that you?

Dyne stands up.

DYNE

Now, there’s a voice I haven’t heard in years.

He limps forward, closer to Barrett.

A voice I’ll never forget.

BARRETT

I knew I’d see ya again someday. I figured you’d had the same operation an’ were alive somewhere. Listen, Dyne, I need to—

Barrett starts to move forward, but Dyne shoots at his feet. Barrett stops.

DYNE

I… hear a voice.

BARRETT

…?

Dyne stares up at the sky with his arms open wide.

DYNE

It’s Eleanor’s. I can hear her. She’s begging me… not to hate your rotten guts.

He lowers his head and arms back down.

That’s why I didn’t hunt you down.

BARRETT

I know I messed up. I’m not askin’ ya to forgive me. But… what’re you doin’ in a place like this? Killin’ folk who ain’t even involved. Why?

DYNE

Why? What difference does it make!? You think having a reason will fix everything? If the people of Corel could hear all of Shin-Ra’s excuses, d’ya think they’d give a damn? I don’t need a reason! All we ever get is bullets and bullshit. What’s left is a world of despair and emptiness. And that’s all!

BARRETT

DYNE

You still wanna know why, huh? All right, I’ll tell you why. ‘Cause I wanna destroy everythin’.

Dyne fires his gun off to the side.

This place.

He fires his gun off to the other side.

Everyone in it.

He fires his gun at Barrett’s feet.

The whole damn world!

He turns away from Barrett and faces the ravine and grave markers.

I got nothin’ left here. Corel, Eleanor, Marin…

Barrett stretches his left arm out toward Dyne.

BARRETT

Dyne… Marin… Marin’s alive.

Dyne turns to look at Barrett.

DYNE

…?

BARRETT

That day… I headed back to the village. I accepted it was the end of the line. All I wanted to do was spend my last moments with Mina. That’s when I found her—your daughter Marin.

Dyne faces the ravine again.

DYNE

BARRETT

She’s in Midgar. Let’s go see her, yeah?

DYNE

So… she’s still alive? All right, Barrett. I guess we gotta end this like men.

BARRETT

What!?

Dyne faces Barrett and raises his arms and eyes back toward the sky.

DYNE

Eleanor’s all sad and lonely. I gotta take Marin to her…

Dyne lowers his arms and gaze.

BARRETT

Dyne! You crazy!?

DYNE

Marin wants to see her mum, don’t she?

Dyne begins firing at Barrett.

BARRETT

Stop! Dyne! I can’t die here!

Dyne stops firing, but has the gun still pointed at Barrett.

DYNE

Oh, yeah? Well my life ended that day.

Dyne continues firing again. Barrett attempts to shield himself with his arms.

BARRETT

Stop it! I don’t wanna fight you!

CLOUD

Standing a ways back.

Barrett!

BARRETT

Cloud, you stay the hell out of it! This is MY problem!!

Barrett fights and defeats Dyne one on one. Dyne falls to his knees.

DYNE

Urgh!

Barrett begins to run toward him.

Get back!

Dyne gets up, limps over, and leans against the wall of the broken house.

It wasn’t just an arm I lost back then. I lost somethin’ irreplaceable. Where did it all go so wrong?

BARRETT

Dyne, I don’t know either, man. Is… Is this the only way we can settle things?

Dyne shakes his head.

DYNE

I told you. I… wanna destroy everythin’. Everythin’. This crazy world. Even me.

Barrett shakes his head.

BARRETT

An’ what ‘bout Marin? What’s gonna happen to her!?

DYNE

Think about it, Barrett. How old was she back then? Even… Even if I did go to see her… there’s no way she’d understand. And more than that…

He looks at his right hand.

These hands… They’re too stained to hold her again.

BARRETT

DYNE

Barrett…

Dyne pulls a pendant off of his neck and tosses it to Barrett.

Give that pendant to Marin. It was my wife’s. Eleanor’s. My memento of her.

Barrett nods.

BARRETT

…I will.

Dyne faces the ravine.

DYNE

So… Marin’s… …already four.

He begins to limp toward it.

Barrett… Don’t you ever make her cry.

BARRETT

Dyne?

At the edge of the ravine, Dyne turns around and stretches his arms out. Barrett runs toward him.

Dyne!

Dyne leans back and allows himself to fall backwards into the ravine.

DYYYYNE!!

Barrett falls to his knees.

Dyne… I’m no different, man. My hands… they’re just as stained.

He screams into the sky.

Uuurrrrrgh!!!

------------------------------------------------------

The scene changes back to Cloud, Barrett, and the other party member being inside the semi with Coates.

COATES

You want somethin’?

BARRETT

Pointing upward.

Yeah. We want out of here.

COATES

Like I told you before, you gotta get the boss’ blessing, then win at the Chocobo Ra—

BARRETT

Dyne can’t talk right now… So, I got this instead.

Barrett shows the pendant to Coates.

COATES

Whoa!

Barrett puts the pendant back in his pocket and points upward again.

BARRETT

Yeah. We want out of here.

Coates shakes his head in disbelief.

COATES

R-right. Did you… kill Dyne?

Coates crosses his arms.

You must’ve, or you’d never be holding that thing. So… Dyne’s dead. Maybe now this place’ll get some peace and quiet. No-one’ll miss the guy, that’s for sure.

Barrett grabs Coates by the collar of his jacket.

BARRETT

The hell do YOU know!!?

COATES

R-r-r-right! I mean, I don’t know nothin’! S-sorry.

Barrett releases him and Coates brushes himself off.

CLOUD

Will you get us out of here now?

COATES

Huh? Haven’t you forgotten somethin’? I already told you! There’s only one way outta here. You gotta win at the Chocobo Races, held up there in the Gold Saucer. And only one prisoner at a time is allowed to race.

Barrett grabs Coates by the jacket collar again.

BARRETT

Say what!?

COATES

Aaah! You can badger me all you like! Rules are rules! I can’t change them! If I do, the whole system down here’ll collapse, and I won’t let that happen! ONE of you can race. After that, it’s up to them to sort things out with Dio.

Barrett lets go of Coate’s collar.

BARRETT

Grr… All right.

He turns to Cloud.

Cloud, you go. Hurry up an’ win that chocobo race. Get us the hell outta here!

AERITH

Yeah, Cloud! You can do it!

TIFA

He’s right, Cloud. I know we can count on you.

RED

Yes. You’re the one with the greatest chance, Cloud.

YUFFIE

Okay, Cloud, go get ‘em!

CAIT

Ye can dae it, Cloud! Knock ‘em all dead!

Cloud looks at Barret and the other party member, then shrugs.

COATES

Y-you ready? All you need now is a manager. They’ll register you and supply the chocobo.

From off screen, a woman chimes in.

WOMAN NPC

Hiiii! I heard about your story…

COATES

Esto?

A woman, in a purple dress, walks into the semi.

ESTO

I’ll be your manager.

COATES

Well, I’m okay with that, but… This is Esto. She may look a bit funny… …but there’s no better manager at the Races.

ESTO

How rude!

She turns to Cloud.

Hmph. Anyway, it’s nice to meet you, Cloud.

COATES

All right, then.

Go to the elevator by the pillar. Esto’ll fill you in on the details.

------------------------------------------------------

The scene changes to Cloud and Esto riding the elevator up.

ESTO

I see. So, that’s what happened. I’ll have a word with Dio. You concentrate on the race. Oh, yeah, that’s right… What I wanted to say earlier was that anyone can be a jockey. This isn’t just a race for criminals. Some compete for fame—others for fortune. Some only live for the race itself. And then there are people like you. Oh… I need to teach you how to ride a chocobo, don’t I?

CLOUD

  1. Go on

  2. I’m not interested (If selected, nothing happens.)

ESTO (Go on)

So… First, use [Start] to switch between auto and manual. You choose between controlling the chocobo yourself or letting it run on its own. It’s actually quite hard to make a chocobo do what you want. If you haven’t bonded with it, it won’t listen to a word you say. That can’t be helped this time, unfortunately. Well, never mind. Most of the chocobos I train are quite mellow, so you should be fine. When you’re in control, use [Square] to speed up, and X to slow down. But watch out… If you push a chocobo faster than it can handle, it’ll lose its stamina in no time. You can guide the chocobo with [Left Direction] and [Right Direction]. To make it sprint, use the whip by pressing O. Obviously, its stamina will run out a lot faster this way. A chocobo with poor temperament doesn’t know its own pace and can wear itself out almost immediately. If you’re dealing with a chocobo like that, switch to manual and slow it down. Finally, some advice for the restless. Once first and second place have been decided… …you can press [Start] to end the race.

Once the elevator reaches the top, Cloud steps out into the jockey lounge. Four jockeys sit around a table playing cards. A fifth in a black hat and red shirt Man stands off to the side.

MAN

A newbie, huh?

Esto steps off of the elevator and faces Man.

ESTO

Hi, Joe.

JOE

Hey, Esto. Lookin pretty as usual.

ESTO

Hehehe. Thanks.

Turns to Cloud.

Let me introduce you, Cloud. This is Joe—one of the top chocobo jockeys.

Joe bows.

JOE

Nice to meet you, Cloud.

He straightens back up.

But, if you’re with Esto, that means…

ESTO

Right! He might be the next big jockey! He made it up here in just one day.

FOUR CARD PLAYING JOCKY NPCs

WHAT!?

Joe lowers his head.

JOE

I see…

He lifts his head back up.

What did you do to end up— …Sorry. We’re not supposed to enquire about the past here. Anyway, that’s very interesting. I have a feeling we’ll meet again. Until next time, Cloud.

Joe leaves the room.

ESTO

Okay, I’ll go and prepare the chocobo. You wait here a moment.

Esto leaves the room.

CARD PLAYING JOCKEY 1 NPC

……

CARD PLAYING JOCKEY 2 NPC

I’ve got nothing to say to you.

CARD PLAYING JOCKEY 3 NPC

……

CARD PLAYING JOCKEY 4 NPC

Don’t get cocky. Those pretty, little muscles won’t help you in the race.

INTERCOM TEXT

The race will be starting shortly. Will the jockeys for the next race please proceed to the paddock. I repeat…

The four jockeys leave, but Cloud stays behind.

ESTO

Cloud.

Esto walks into the lounge.

Thanks for waiting. I registered you in the next race. I prepared this chocobo myself. It should perform quite well. Do you remember how to ride?

CLOUD

  1. How was it again?

  2. Yeah, got it

ESTO (How was it again?)

Okay… First, use [Start] to switch between auto and manual.

ESTO (Yeah, got it)

Good luck.

Cloud performs in the chocobo race.

If Cloud loses the race...

ESTO

Ah, that’s a shame…

ESTO

If Cloud came in 4th place or worse...

It can be a cruel sport.

If Cloud came in 3rd place…

But I expected a little more from you.

If Cloud came in 2nd place…

You were so close!

ESTO

If it is Cloud’s 1st or 2nd loss…

I’ll go find a better chocobo for you. Wait here a moment.

If it is Cloud’s 3rd loss…

Seeing as you weren’t able to win with the last chocobo, well… Right, I’ll go find the best chocobo out there.

If it is Cloud’s 4th or more loss…

You’ve got to be kidding me? There aren’t any chocobos better than that one! Well, if you really want to win, just press [Start], and try out the automatic mode.

Eventually, Cloud wins the race. Back in the lounge with Esto and the jockeys…

ESTO

Congratulations! You’re a free man! Oh, yeah, the manager told me to give you this letter if you won.

Esto hands Cloud the letter. Cloud begins to read it.

DIO

If you’re reading this letter, boy, then you must’ve won. I know you’ve earned it. Esto told me about Dyne. Now that you’ve won, I can pardon you and your friends. I also have a little gift for you by way of apology. I hope you’ll find it useful on your journey. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there in person, but I’m a very busy man.

Your Sincerely, Uncle Dio.

CLOUD

Gift?

Cloud’s PHS rings and he answers it. Oh the PHS…

AERITH

Hey, Cloud! You’re not going to believe this!! The manager’s assistant just stopped by and dropped off a buggy! Now we can cross over deserts and rivers no problem. We’ll be waiting outside. See you soon!

Cloud puts his PHS away and looks at the letter again.
