First of all, if you press L2 while on the world map, you can change the camera’s point-of-view. There are two positions to choose from, so select the one that you prefer. Next, by pressing L1 or R1, you can rotate the camera left and right. Try different angles. Once you’ve found the one you’re happy with, your journey will be more enjoyable. Anything else you’d like to know?

Cloud turns around and takes a few steps away from the group, facing the wall.

Soldier’s main duty after the war was… dealing with those who opposed Shin-Ra. A lot of that work was pretty grim. It was 5 years ago. I was 16.

The scene changes. Cloud and Sephiroth are riding in the back of a covered truck bed next to two Shin-Ra infantrymen. Cloud is staring out the back of the truck bed.

I joined Soldier so that I could be like you. But by the time I made first class, the war was over. If I’m gonna be a hero, I need to be part of something big. What about you… hero? How do you feel about this mission?

Cloud scratches the back of his head.
Our orders are to investigate a deteriorated Mako reactor, which is behaving abnormally. There’s also been an outbreak of brutal monsters in the area. Once we’re finished with them, we can identify the problem at the reactor and neutralize it.

Cloud crosses his arms and taps his foot, before relaxing his arms back at his sides.

SEPHIROTH
Niblheim.
​
CLOUD
Niblheim… That’s where I’m from.

There’s a bump and the Shin-Ra infantryman driving the truck turns to face the people in the back.

S-sir! Some crazy looking creature just jumped out at us!

Sephiroth stands up.

SEPHIROTH
That would be one of our monsters.

Sephiroth and Cloud go out to fight the green dragon that had attacked the truck. Sephiroth kills the dragon in two moves. By comparison, if the dragon attacks Cloud, then Cloud will become unconscious. The screen changes back to the inside of the inn, where everyone is still listening to Cloud. Cloud slumps his head.

CLOUD
Sephiroth’s strength was unreal. He was far stronger in reality than any of the stories you hear.
​
AERITH
Giggling. …Even when compared to other Soldiers, like you?
​
Cloud scratches the back of his head.
​
CLOUD
Yeah. I was mesmerized by the way Sephiroth fought.

TIFA

CLOUD
And then we reached Niblheim…
Screen changes back to the flashback, at the entrance of Niblheim. Sephiroth walks toward it, turns around, and makes a ‘follow me’ motion with his arm.

How does it feel? It’s been a while since you were back in your hometown, right? So, how does it feel? I wouldn’t know. I don’t have a hometown…

CLOUD
Um… Then where are your parents?

SEPHIROTH

Sephiroth laughs and shakes his head.

The two infantrymen and Cloud approach the entrance before stopping. The first infantryman takes an extra look around the town before turning to face Cloud.

Screen fades to black and shows the inside of the inn with Cloud and group. Barrett is waving his arms in the air.

Midgar is really something. To tell you the truth, I feel totally behind the times… like a complete dork. I’m short on money right now, so I’m living in the slums. The rooms are clean, at least. Are my parents still running the shop every day? Have there been any more attacks by those monsters? And, most of all, how are you doing, Tifa? It already feels like I haven’t seen you in years.
We were all talking about you last night. Everyone likes you. And I’ve always admired you, but I could never betray my friends… You’re our idol. I might have acted all cool, but, the truth is, I was just scared of being rejected.

Let’s see… It’s been about one year since the boom in monsters. Other than that, not much has changed. Nothing ever does in a tiny village like this, as you know. When they were building the reactor, that’s when the village was at its best. WHEN they were building it. But it’s been downhill ever since they completed it. A few years after, the trees on the mountain withered away. Was the reactor a good idea or a bad idea? With hindsight, it’s obvious. But what can we do about it now? If we could just be rid of the monsters… …at least then things would be a little more bearable around here.

Standing by the innkeeper’s desk is an older gentleman with a red cape.

Hmmm. You’re from Shin-Ra? Here to exterminate the monsters, yes?

I’m Zangan. I travel around the world teaching children martial arts. I have 128 students, all over the world! In this village, a girl named Tifa is my student.

Tifa is very perceptive. She’ll be a powerful fighter.

Cloud goes up the second floor of the inn to find Sephiroth standing by the window and staring out of it.

The infantryman comes up the stairs and stands near the doorway inside the bedroom. Sephiroth turns from the window and faces Cloud.

SEPHIROTH
This scenery. It feels familiar somehow.

Next morning as the last one awake, Cloud runs out of the inn, joining Sephiroth and the two infantrymen. He scratches his head after catching up. Tifa’s father and the man with a camera are nearby.

Cloud walks over to the infantrymen and faces them. Tifa’s Father takes a few steps closer.

TIFA’S FATHER NPC
Listen to me, Sephiroth, if something happens…

Tifa runs up while her father speaks. She’s wearing a cowgirl outfit.

SEPHIROTH
Calm down.
​
TIFA
I’ll be all right, Dad! I have two strong men from Soldier with me. I’m Tifa! Nice to meet you!
​
Cloud suddenly turns around to face Tifa.
​
CLOUD
Tifa! You’re the guide!?
​
He runs a few steps toward her and stops.
​
TIFA
That’s right.
​
It just so happens I’m the number one guide in the village.
​
CLOUD
But it’s too dangerous! I can’t let you get involved!
​
SEPHIROTH
Then you can protect her. Very well. Let’s go.
​
Sephiroth begins to walk, but the Man With Camera NPC takes a few steps after him.

MAN WITH CAMERA NPC
Um… Mr Sephiroth… A picture? As a momento? Tifa, ask Cloud for me too.
​
Tifa faces Cloud, who shrugs. Tifa and Cloud walk over and stand next to eachother. Sephiroth walks over last.

MAN WITH CAMERA NPC
Cheeeese!
The picture is taken and Sephiroth walks away immediately after.

The scene changes to a panned view of Mt Nibl, with Cloud narrating.

A mako reactor was built inside Mt Nibl. The cold mountain air was just as I remembered it…

On Mt Nibl, Cloud follows Tifa onto a rope bridge. The two infantrymen are not far behind.

Okay, from here on it gets a lot tougher. Keep up!

Tifa runs on ahead.

Let’s just hurry this up.

Cloud and the infantrymen start to catch up in crossing the bridge, when it begins to shake.

TIFA
Th-the bridge…!!
​
The bridge snaps. Cloud, Tifa, Sephiroth, and the two infantrymen all fall to the area below. Cloud and Tifa are collapsed near eachother. They stand up unharmed. Sephiroth and an infantryman walk around the bend to join them.
​
SEPHIROTH
Seems we’re all right. Can we make it back?
​
TIFA
The caves around here are intertwined, a bit like an ant farm, so… Oh, and Mr Sephiroth, one of your men is missing.
​
SEPHIROTH
It may sound cruel, but we’ve no time to search for him. We can’t go back, so we must go on. Stick close together.
​
They continue down the path and entering a cave.
​
CLOUD
What’s this.
​
TIFA
This cave has a strange colour, doesn’t it?
​
SEPHIROTH
It must be the Mako energy. The mountain is especially abundant in it. That’s why a reactor was built here.
​
Continuing through the cave, they come across a light emanating from a glowing, green pool.
​
CLOUD
What’s this?
​
SEPHIROTH
A Mako spring. It’s said to be a miracle of nature.
​
TIFA
Despite its great beauty…
Tifa walks up to it, turns to face the group, and spreads her arms out.
…it too will disappear if the reactor continues to suck up the Mako energy.
​
Sephiroth walks up to the spring. There’s a rock in the middle of the spring and sitting on top of the rock is a glowing green crystal. Tifa and Sephiroth look at it.
​
SEPHIROTH
That’s materia. When Mako energy is condensed, materias like this one may form. It’s very rare to see materia in its natural state.
​
Cloud walks up to look at the crystal as well.
​
CLOUD
Now that you mention it… why is it that when we equip materia, we can also use magic?
​
SEPHIROTH
You’re in Soldier and don’t know that? The knowledge of the Ancients is sealed inside the materia. The knowledge to manipulate the power of the land. It connects us to the planet and calls forth magic. Or so they say.
​
CLOUD
Magic… A mysterious power.
​
SEPHIROTH
Ha, ha, ha, ha!
​
CLOUD
Did I say something funny?
​
SEPHIROTH
Shaking his head.
A man once told me never to use unscientific terms like ‘mysterious power’! He said that it shouldn’t even be called magic! I just remembered how angry he was, that’s all.

CLOUD
Who was it?
​
SEPHIROTH
Hojo, of Shin-Ra. An inexperienced man who inherited the work of a great scientist. He was a walking mass of complexes.
TIFA
A Mako spring… So… the knowledge of the Ancients resides here.
​
They continue along the path until they reach the reactor.
​
TIFA
We’ve made it. That sure was the long way around though.
​
Cloud walks up to her.
​
CLOUD
Tifa, you wait here.
​
TIFA
I’m going inside too! I wanna see!
​
Cloud shakes his head. Sephiroth begins up the steps before turning toward Tifa.
​
SEPHIROTH
It’s off-limits to civilians. This place is full of Shin-Ra’s industrial secrets.
​
TIFA
But—
​
Sephiroth turns to face the infantryman.
​
SEPHIROTH
Take care of the young lady.
​
The infantryman nod and moves to block Tifa’s way as Cloud and Sephiroth head up the stairs. Tifa stamps her foot.
​
TIFA
Hmph! Man! Better take real good care of me then!
The scene changes to inside the Mako reactor. Cloud runs further inside until entering a chamber with pods. A flight of stairs leads to a door labeled Jenova. Sephiroth is standing in front of it, scanning it back and forth with his eyes. Cloud approaches him.

CLOUD
‘Jenova’. What’s that? Is it locked?
​
Sephiroth walks down the stairs and Cloud follows him. Sephiroth stands in front of one of the pods.
​
SEPHIROTH
Here’s the reason for the malfunction… This is broken. Cloud, close the valve.
​
If Cloud talks to Sephiroth before closing the valve…
​
SEPHIROTH
Have you closed it?
​
Cloud closes the valve.
​
SEPHIROTH
Why did it break?
Sephiroth pulls himself up to look through the pod window. He hops down and turns to Cloud, putting his chin in his hand as though thinking.
I see, Hojo. But you’re still no match for Professor Gusto. This system condenses and then freezes Mako energy. At least, it did originally. Now… what happens to Mako energy when it is further condensed?
​
Cloud crosses his arms and looks up.
​
CLOUD
Uh, um… Oh yeah! It can become materia!
​
SEPHIROTH
Right. Normally. But Hojo put something in there. Take a look. Look through the window.
​
Cloud pulls himself up to look through the window. Inside the pod is a humanoid monster. Cloud falls to the ground and looks at Sephiroth.
​
CLOUD
Wh-what is that!?
​
SEPHIROTH
Members of Soldier, like you, have been bathed in Mako. You’re different from normal people, but still human. But… what about these? They’ve been exposed to far higher concentrations of Mako than you.
​
Cloud gets to his feet.
​
CLOUD
So, these are the monsters?
​
SEPHIROTH
Yes. And it was Hojo, of Shin-Ra, who produced these monsters. Grotesque life forms created by Mako energy. That’s the reality of it.
​
CLOUD
Normal members of Soldier? You mean you’re different?
Sephiroth begins to laugh. Cloud holds his arm out in concern.
H-hey…Sephiroth!
​
SEPHIROTH
No… It’s not possible… Was I…
Sephiroth pulls out his sword and begins slashing at the pods. Cloud jumps back out of the way.
Was I created the same way? Am I… no different to these monsters?
​
CLOUD
Sephiroth…
​
Sephiroth continues to slash at the pods.
​
SEPHIROTH
You saw them! Inside all of these… They’re human.
​
CLOUD
Human!? No way!
​
Sephiroth turns to face Cloud.
​
SEPHIROTH
Ever since I was a child, I’ve felt… …different from the rest. Special somehow. But… not like this.
​
Sephiroth twists around toward one of the pods as it begins to shake. The monster inside bursts out and lies moaning. The screen fades to black.
​
CLOUD
Am I no different? I didn’t understand his words at the time. More than anything, I was shocked that Shin-Ra had been creating monsters.
​
The scene changes to show the inside of the inn. Barrett starts shaking his fist.
​
BARRETT
Argh! Shin-Ra! The more I hear the more I hate it!
​
TIFA
Who would have believed that the Mako reactor held a secret like that?
​
RED
Is this the reason for the increase in monsters over the past few years? I think we should listen to Cloud’s story more carefully from here on. Isn’t that so, Barrett?
​
BARRETT
Turns to face Red. (W-what ya askin’ me for!?)
​
BARRETT (Special Note: While unnamed, this dialogue implies Barret’s choice, not Cloud’s.)

We returned to Nibelheim. Sephiroth confined himself to the inn. He wouldn’t talk to anyone.

And then he just disappeared.

CLOUD
We found him inside the biggest building in Niblheim.
​
TIFA
The villagers called it the Shin-Ra Mansion. It had been unoccupied for as long as I could remember.
​
CLOUD
We hadn’t even been born the last time it was used. People from Shin-Ra lived there a long time ago.
​
Scene changes back to Niblheim, with Tifa, Man With Camera NPC, Zangan, and Tifa’s Father standing outside the Shin-Ra Mansion. Cloud and Shin-Ra Infantryman 1 NPC exits the inn and run up to join the group. Cloud nods at everyone in the group and then heads inside the mansion.

If Cloud’s turns back to talk to them, he’ll find Man With Camera NPC, Zanagn, and Tifa’s Father blocking the gate exit…

Where’s Sephiroth?

ZANGAN
This isn’t going to add to the village’s problems, is it?

Zangan slumps and shakes his head.
​
ZANGAN
Shin-Ra showed up to prevent any damaging information being leaked. You pick these things up when you’ve travelled as much as I have.

Not if Sephiroth has anything to say about it!

Zangan slumps and shakes his head.
​
ZANGAN
Oh my. You sure do have faith in him.
​
TIFA’S FATHER
Until we know it’s safe, you’re not going anywhere.

Cloud goes inside the mansion and heads to the Northeast corner of the mansion. The Shin-Ra Intantryman NPC is there.

SHIN-RA INFANTRYMAN 1 NPC
There’s no sign of Mr Sephiroth, but I know I saw him go into that room…
​
Cloud goes into the room and finds a secret passage. He walks down a spiral staircase into a basement hall. At the end of the hall is a library with Sephiroth pacing as he reads.
​
SEPHIROTH
A seemingly dead organism was found in a 2000 year old stratum. Professor Gusto named the organism ‘Jenova’. X day, X month, X year… Jenova confirmed an Ancient. X day, X month, X year… Jenova Project authorized. Mako Reactor 1 approved for use.
Sephiroth stops mid stride and lowers the book.
My mother’s name is Jenova. Jenova Project… Is this a coincidence? Professor Gusto… Why didn’t you tell me anything? Why did you die?
Cloud approaches Sephiroth.
I wish to be alone.

Cloud leaves the library.
​
CLOUD
Thereafter, Sephiroth confined himself to the mansion. He continued to read—as if possessed. And not once did the light in the basement go out.
​
The scene changes and Cloud wakes up in one of Shin-Ra Mansion’s beds. He walks across the mansion to the basement entrance. The infantryman is standing nearby.
​
SHIN-RA INFANTRYMAN 1 NPC
Sephiroth seems different.
​
Cloud heads down the basement passageway to the library.
​
SEPHIROTH
Ha, ha, ha…
​
Cloud continues to the study in the back of the library. Sephiroth is sitting at a desk.
​
SEPHIROTH
Who’s there!? Hmph. Loathsome traitor.
​
CLOUD
Traitor?
​
Sephiroth stands up.
​
SEPHIROTH
Ignorant traitor. I will explain it to you. This planet originally belonged to the Cetra—a race of nomads. They would travel, open the planet, and then move on. At the end of their long, harsh journey, they would find the Promised Land and supreme happiness. However… some began to dislike traveling. They built dwellings and elected to lead an easier life. They took that which the Cetra and the planet had bestowed upon them and gave back not one whit in return! Those are you ancestors.

CLOUD
Sephiroth…
​
SEPHIROTH
Long ago, disaster struck the planet. Your ancestors fled in all directions. They survived because they hid. The crisis was averted because the Cetra sacrificed themselves. After that, your ancestors continued to spread out and multiply. Now all that’s left of the Cetra are these reports.

CLOUD
What does this have to do with you?
​
SEPHIROTH
Don’t you see? A 2000 year-old Ancient, named Jenova, was found in a layer of ice… …which led to the Jenova Project. The Jenova Project intended to create humans with the abilities of the Ancients—that is, the Cetra. I was the one created.
​
CLOUD
C-created?
​
SEPHIROTH
Yes. Professor Gusto, leader of the Jenova Project—and a scientific genius—created me.
​
Sephiroth begins to walk down the hall toward the library’s exit.
​
CLOUD
How… did he…?
Cloud begins to run after him.
S-Sephiroth?
​
SEPHIROTH
Out of my way. I’m going to see my mother.
​
Sephiroth leaves the library and Cloud chases after him, exiting the mansion to find the village in flames. If Cloud walks through Shin-Ra Mansion’s gate, a bodyless voice shouts.

BODYLESS VOICE TEXT
Heeey! Is anyone there?
​
As Cloud turns toward the voice and approaches the village.
​
ZANGAN
Oh, it’s you! You’re still sane, right?
Cloud nods.
Then come over here and give me a hand!
​
Cloud runs to the middle of the town and looks around at the burning village. He slumps his head and shakes it.
​
ZANGAN
I’ll check the house… You take the one over there.
​
Zangan runs into the burning general store. The Man With Camera NPC and Shin-Ra Infantryman NPC are lying on the ground. The infantryman is laying near Cloud’s house.
​
MAN WITH CAMERA NPC
Hey… Hey… Am I going to die?
​
SHIN-RA INFANTRYMAN NPC
Sephi…roth.
​
Cloud slumps and shakes his head in response to the infantryman. Cloud runs into his old house, but he walks back out and shakes his head, looking again at the village.
​
CLOUD
Terrible. Sephiroth… this is beyond cruel.
​
Cloud shakes his head again and turns around to witness Sephiroth cutting down more villagers before walking through the flames. Cloud follows him to the reactor, making his way toward Jenova’s chamber. On the way, Cloud finds Tifa kneeling over her father’s body with Sephiroth’s sword lying on the ground nearby.
​
TIFA
Dad… It was Sephiroth! Sephiroth did this to you, didn’t he!? Sephiroth, Soldier, Mako reactors, Shin-Ra… all of them! I hate them all!!
​
Tifa picks up the sword and runs inside. Sephiroth is standing in front of Jenova’s chamber door.
​
SEPHIROTH
Mother, I’m here to see you. Please open the door.
​
Tifa approaches with sword in hand.
​
TIFA
How could you do that to my dad!? How could you do that to everyone in the village!?
Tifa climbs up the stairs and raises the sword to attack Sephiroth. Sephiroth pulls the sword from her grasp and slashes her, sending Tifa flying down the stairs. Cloud runs in and Sephiroth walks through the chamber door toward Jenova. Cloud bends down and begins to scoop Tifa up in his arms.
When I’m… in a bind… …you said you’d come… You promised me.
​
Cloud lifts Tifa up and carries her to the side to lay her down. He then follows Sephiroth through the chamber. Sephiroth stands in front of Jenova. A mechanical angel figure is attached to the front of Jenova’s glass tank.. His arms are raised over his head.
​
SEPHIROTH
Mother… let’s take back the planet. I have a great idea. We’ll head to the Promised Land.
​
CLOUD
Sephiroth… My family! My hometown! How could you!?
​
Sephiroth lowers his arms and begins to laugh.
​
SEPHIROTH
Ha, ha, ha! Here they are again, Mother. With your superior abilities, knowledge, and magic, you were destined to rule the world. But they… those worthless fools stole the planet from you and your people. You need not be sad any longer.
​
Sephiroth reaches up and rips the mechanical angel off of Jenova’s tank, revealing Jenova itself inside. Cloud pulls out his sword.
​
CLOUD
What are you going to do about this grief!? My family? My friends? …Having my hometown taken from me? It’s the same as your sorrow!
​
SEPHIROTH
Ha, ha, ha! My sorrow? What do I have to be sorrowful about? I am the chosen one. I have been chosen to rule the world. I was given life in order to take this planet from imbeciles like you—to reclaim it for the Cetra. What, then, should I be sad about?
​
Sephiroth takes up a fighting stance.
​
CLOUD
Sephiroth, I trusted you…
Cloud takes up a fighting stance.
No. Not anymore. You’re not the Sephiroth I used to know!
The screen flashes between Cloud and Sephiroth before going white. The scene changes back to the inside of the inn.

CLOUD
And that’s the end of my story.

BARRETT
Wait a damn minute! What happened next?

Cloud shrugs.
​
CLOUD
I don’t remember.

AERITH
What happened to Sephiroth?
​
CLOUD
Considering the sheer strength he possessed, it’s unlikely I defeated him.
​
TIFA
Sephiroth has been declared dead in the public records. I read it in the newspaper.
​
AERITH
The Shin-Ra Company is in charge of the media, so you can’t rely on that.
​
CLOUD
I need to be sure… about what happened back then. I went up against Sephiroth and survived. Why didn’t he kill me?

TIFA
I’m alive too.
​
AERITH
